Joker Folie a Deux Review

Post by clearspira »

Well that was... interesting.

The first film was a homage to Taxi Driver. This one is a musical courtroom drama.

I'll give it this much: it tried something different. The comic book formula is so stale. It could have worked. The problem for me though is that this film comes off as less of a sequel and more of a retelling of the first film. He seems to be learning the same lessons that he has already learned.

It is not really a good musical either. I don't know if Joaquin Phoenix can actually sing or whether he just wasn't in this film, but he really isn't very impressive. Even Lady Gaga did not seem to be on form. There are no memorable hits here, nothing that you would put on the radio, which considering that Gaga is meant to be releasing a companion album I find that kind of strange.

I am also very, very bored of Harley Quinn. DC seems to be of the attitude that a film featuring the Joker cannot be successful if you do not shove Harley Quinn into it somewhere. The last time we got a truly stand alone Joker was Heath Ledger.

Just very strange all round really. Kind of reminds me of The Matrix. Odd comparison I know, but when that film first came out, there were fevered discussions up and down the land about the dangers of technology, the nature of self, of philosophy, of god, of fashion. And then the sequels came out and all of those discussions stopped because they were just that bad. It was very similar with the first Joker. We got discussions about mental health, loneliness, how society treats people, the negative role of the media. Those discussions will now stop and it is a pity.

I won't spoil the ending. I did not like it.

I think that might be the highest ranking I seen for this movie.

It's a shitty film because it doesn't want to be about the Joker.

I just do not think that it is that bad tbh. A lot of bandwagon jumping is certainly evident as well as some politically motivated vitriol from people who never actually saw the movie. For me, this isn't anywhere near my top ten worst comic book movies of all time. I would watch this movie again five times before boredom beset to force me to watch The Flash, The Marvels, Thor Love and Thunder or The Eternals.

I have not seen this movie, I am not interested in seeing it.

I am curious on your rating. You say you did not like it, yet you gave an above average score.

So what did it do well to be better than meh?

My opinion on why it's shitty is that the director seems determined that the Joker character be deconstructed and we not see him do any more crimes because he's not a supervillain, society has just propped him up as one. Basically, it's the Mandarin plot from Iron Man 3. There's no Mandarin, it's just something the cops love to justify their existence and the public look up to a folk hero. When, in fact, Arthur Fleck is just a mentally ill desperate man. You could do that but he'd actually have to be allowed to be the Joker for awhile.

And the fact is that he is finally broken and admits he's not the Joker because...yes, prison rape.

I feel fine spoiling that because people should know.

I have no interest in the movie.

It took me a long time to get the interest to even watch the first one and even then I was not that impressed. The first movie just didn't do anything for me and maybe if it was connected to The Batman movie it could have worked as a origin story.
I got nothing to say here.
