Okay everybody stop doom scrolling and listen up! This is your captain and older trans lesbian sister speaking here!
Things are going to be bad for a while but worrying about it isn't going to help anyone's mental health. I recommend that everyone take a long and much needed break from the current political situation. What I normally do is just check on one or two ongoing issues ones a month and then delete that from my history so it doesn't show up later
We did what we could and will be doing all we can as time goes on, right now all we can do is wait for the next election in the senate in 2 years and the next election in 4 years. To help let's do what this site is all about, talking about our opinions on fictional shit that has been debated longer then it ever really needed to be.
Today's subject, You know it, I love it, you're all likely tired of me talking about it and won't even after the day I die, Lara Croft and Sam Nishimura's love life. Are they gay for each other- Yes, Yes they are, they're in love and I will hear no argument on this. The two have been shipped by every writer who has worked on them and all said writers have tried to make them official and at one point they were even suppose to kiss and realize their feelings was romantic and the Netflix show seems to be going in that direction too.
They are perfect for each other, Sam frankly has more personality then all of Lara's previous love interests combined and their relationship with each other is frankly more engaging then Lara's relationship with Jonah, Jacob and her parents especially since, thanks to the comics, the relationship has had a chance to be properly developed with ups and downs that feel real.
Lara's relationship with Sam make's her more interesting because it gives her something to fight for beyond the Tomb of the week or trying to avenge her parents. There's only so much you can get out of "Hello, my name is Lara Croft you killed my father and mother, prepare to die." before it gets old especially since they keep changing who Lara is trying to kill to get revenge.
In the comics it was her butler, in the the 2001 movie it was the villain of the week, in the Legends games it was Natla, in the Survivor games it was some guy I don't remember the name of even though he was the main villain and in the 2018 film it was another villain of the week.
With Batman there is usually a consistent theme to the person who killed Bruce's parents, he was some punk with a gun who killed two people for a necklace. Regardless of who the killer is the point is it really could just be anyone because there is nothing that strange about this event. It was a simple mugging gone horribly wrong and the person who did it got away. Thus Batman was born.
Lara's parents have gone through quite a few changes over the last 28 years, starting out as just some rich people who wanted to marry their daughter off, then in the comics they were still rich but now more carrying parents who were killed by their butler. Then Lara's father became an archeologist and was killed by someone with ties to an ancient order.
I feel that killing Lara's parents and having one or both of them be archeologists and having them die adds a lot to Lara's character but with the two of the three movies and 5 of the games her avenging her parents has become the only thing some writers seem to care about her.
With Batman the death of his parents defines him and everything he does is to make sure that no child will have to go through what he did. But there is more to his character then just that, he himself is now a father, he has a father in Alfred, he has friends and he does what he can to help all of them because they give Bruce something to live for.
Lara needs the same thing and frankly no one else has been able to give her that. Jonah is just kinda there, her love interests come and go without leaving much of an impact on her character and her enemies are just people she's there to fight. Sam gives her someone to protect and to help make her more human and if done right can match her in awesomeness levels.
And, I hope this helps you all. Seriously just writing about this has helped take my mind off things right now and I'll be going to continue playing Dragon Age The Veilguard as I really am enjoying it. And when there's something I can do to help I'll do that but for right now, just waiting for that moment to come takes to much work. It's like doing half the hurt for them so for now I'll focus on things that bring me joy and hope for the best.

They have a lot of chemistry.
Rhianna Prachett and Gail Simone would be for it.
But the IP owners said no.

I and others have mentioned that it's so funny is that right after Crystal Dynamics were freed of Square Enix the first things they did was A) Address Lara's PTSD and B) Brought Sam Back and are making her a major character, even building her return over the course of the first season.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 1:21 am They have a lot of chemistry.

Yeah, though I am wouldn't be surprised they never go the extra step.Winter wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 1:40 amI and others have mentioned that it's so funny is that right after Crystal Dynamics were freed of Square Enix the first things they did was A) Address Lara's PTSD and B) Brought Sam Back and are making her a major character, even building her return over the course of the first season.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 1:21 am They have a lot of chemistry.

Yeah, I'm half expecting a Link and Zelda situation here where we don't get a straight answer if these two are a romantic couple or not. The first season is already dripping with a ton of subtext, from Lara sad that Sam didn't show up, her greatest nightmare being Sam turning against her, Lara calling up Sam because she doesn't know who else to talk to and just about everything in the ending having so much romantic subtext that it's practically text at this point.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 1:49 amYeah, though I am wouldn't be surprised they never go the extra step.Winter wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 1:40 amI and others have mentioned that it's so funny is that right after Crystal Dynamics were freed of Square Enix the first things they did was A) Address Lara's PTSD and B) Brought Sam Back and are making her a major character, even building her return over the course of the first season.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 1:21 am They have a lot of chemistry.

But at this point, between the show and comics, we've have over a decade of teasing with nothing concrete. As I've mentioned before this is still better then all of Lara's other romantic interests who are just forgotten after they're introduced but at the same time some of those love interests at least get a kiss while Sam's kiss with Lara was cut altogether.
Still Netflix has an overall solid LGBT record so that might change.
