Waiting for Godot is a play I often find myself thinking about. It's very quotable and is an interesting watch but with all that said I would never call it a favorite of mine it's just a play I think about. I've seen a lot of different theories and ideas about what it all means.
Ian McKellen thinks it's about WWI Soldiers waiting for a messenger, some think it's a timeloop while others assume the characters are in Hell or purgatory and that Godot is God. What chooses to see in the play and what many think it's all about and that no one can agree says a lot to this stories staying power.
Waiting for Godot is 72 years old right now. Think about that, this play has been around for 72 years and we're still talking about it and people can't even decide what it's about.
Sometimes the stranger ideas are the ones that really stick with us.
The moment I think of most in the play is a bit I've quoted before, Vladimir's "Was I sleeping while the others suffered?'
This is a scene that often goes overlooked when talking about this play and I think it's the key to understanding what it is and which is said towards the end of the speech "Habit is a great deadener. At me too someone is looking. At me too someone is saying he is sleeping, he knows nothing, let him sleep on. I cannot go on. What have I said?"
And this and the true meaning of the name Godot reveals the real meaning behind the play. Godot means forever. Vladimir and Estragon are waiting for forever. Godot will never come no matter how long they wait he will never show up and they will never leave and all they can do is distract themselves with habits they've developed while Waiting for Godot. Just repeating the same patterns over and over and over again until they forget what happened before and all they can do is wait.
So, what do you think of this oddball play?
