Civil Defense (DS9)

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

Watching this review, I expected the episode to get a much higher score. Then when shocked when it only got a 6. Then i remembered, oh, this is DS9. A much better show than Voyager or Enterprise. Slightly above average is like a 9 or 10 on those shows.

I know right? Sort of like when he does a good Voyager episode and rants on it for twenty minutes then gives it an 8 anyway. A five on DS9 is an eight or maybe even a nine on Voyager.

Remember how he had to beg to have it kept running so he could come up with the solution? What if that was picked up on by the designers/builders of newer ships and it was decided that in addition to avoiding holodecks malfunctions, a seperate system would help future engineers also be able to use the holodecks for simulations and the like without having to rely on the main power grid in case a similar situation occurred where that wouldn't be viable (or running said simulation would drain the power reserves when those were needed to be conserved as much as possible)?
That's actually probably the worst situation to have it on a separate power system. The booby trap drained all power (which is why shuttles weren't discussed at all, that and the writers probably forgot about them again) so it would have sucked the small generator for the holodeck dry long before it finished with the main reactor.
Not necessarily. Depending on the amount of power initially, the dropoff rate might be much higher / more noticable.

In physics, something very hot will cool down much more quickly than something which is only warm. It might be that the holodeck generators simply provide a small surplus to what is needed, while the warp core, the central nexus for the ship, provides huge amounts of power, but it's partitioned off into smaller systems. While each system needs less power, when the production of energy is rapidly diminished, the short-fall means that many systems fail quickly, while the independent holodeck does lose some power, but not enough to take it offline (at least not immediately).

(Hopefully I've explained this clearly enough)

You have but I don't think the power draining abilities of the booby trap are analogis to heat loss.

There was a similar plot in a first season episode where they triggered a virus or somesuch in replicators that caused aphasia.

I love that episode. I felt it really captured a unique part of DS9. It felt like they had just stepped into the messy aftermath of a very messy war and were constantly fighting even the infrastructure to try and impose order on it. It was just full of wonderful little moments too. Jake and Ben, Kira at the end of her very short fuse, the first hints of the character Julian would later begin, O'Brien suffering, Odo and Quark as the last station residents standing. Brilliant. I don't think Chuck has reviewed that yet, I'm sort of dreading it when he does get around to it. So far every episode I loved he's hated and every episode I hated he's loved. I am the anti-Chuck.

 We both hate Neelix though. Some things are multiversal constants.
