I mean, a centrist is someone who wildly supports one side in every single matter but makes a single joke about your own side once every 3 years, and it's a SUPER light joke, right?

I was curious. I thought he was frank enough about the encounter. He squarely stated what he expected and how it met his expectations, and also that he personally felt candid about the whole affair, and that does feel distinctive of Trump on a personal level and distinctive of his time with other presidents who he has actually aligned with. I don't feel that he alluded to a compromise of principles really.

There's a big notion that Maher played into Trump's agenda but I don't think at this moment that there's really any sway between the particular camps of Maher and Trump. I mean there's bound to be a little as they're both libertarian fields, but the electricity between the two established sides is characterized antagonism.

The point of the occurrence between the two had more to do with Maher being able to bring up administrative affairs in a dialog outside of the public persona that trump elicits which more resembles a hodgepodge of special interest organizational bantering. Maher isn't really trying to say that this personable side makes up for the public persona (and states that from the beginning), but that this event turned out to be more of an actual dialog than he was expecting. In other words, this encounter was in fact a more suitable response to some form of protest or questioning than we would be to expect from typical mediums.
