Favourite Reviews of Sf Debris

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

Favourite Reviews of Sf Debris

Post by Winter »

In Celebration of SF Debris web site I think it would be awesome to go over everyone's favorite reviews from a viewers with an opinion.

For me I would say that my overall favorite reviews that Chuck has made would be, in no particular order.

Dragon Age: Origins
While Dragon Age: Inquisition was my proper start with DA Chuck's review of DAO was the first time I had seen anything in relation to the series and seeing his review is what convinced me to give the series a chance and sure enough I ended up loving DAI and even based my Keep setting to be a bit more like Chuck's before changing it to see how the story was effected.

Doctor Who: Planet of Fire
Okay this is here manly for the bit with Chipmunk Voice Mini-Master. I had to stop playing the review cause I could not stop laughing, and then re-watched it cause I like laughing.

SW The Old Republic: Imperial Agent
While the DA series and KotOR reviews are fun I gotta say that I have a soft spot for Chuck's rants for the MMO/RPG along with the repeated Blind Jokes he makes for Rex Dart.

The Heroes/Shadow/Hermits Journey series
I've always been a big fan of George Lucas and I really don't feel he derves all the hate he gets as while the Prequels and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull have their flaws I still enjoyed them and hearing Chuck go over why they are the Prequels ended up way they did was really nice. Great series from a Great reviewer about a great person.

Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
This was actually the very first review from Chuck I had ever seen so it holds a special place for me. I love how he ties in the literally elements by quoting them directly and how they tie into TWoK

Madoka Magica
Three words, Time After Time! Anyone who has seen the reviews know what I'm talking about.

SW The Clone Wars: The Nightsisters Trilogy
This was actually the first video I requested Chuck to review and I'm so happy that he enjoyed it and that it opened the doors to others requesting that he watch the show. BTW I hope he gets to the Water War trilogy as that is the episode where Jar Jar saves the Galaxy. Yes really.

The Legend of Korra: Book 2 Spirits, The Sting
I will never tire of hearing Chuck praise Asami for how awesome she is while simultaneously insulting Mako for being such a useless twat.

ST Voyager: The Cloud
Fun review with one of my all time favorite jokes. "You cannot hide from me Coffey, I Will Find You!" And of course the creation of the Voodoo Shark Trope.

Star Trek Voyager: The Thaw
This was actually the first positive review of Voyager from Chuck I had seen as after Khan I started watching his reviews in order of release so it was nice to see him being nice to the show for a change. And I decided to check out The Thaw and ended up really enjoying it.

And that's all I got, I love these reviews and hope to see even more of them in the near future. :)

The Heroes/Shadow/Hermits Journey series is fresh in my mind, just saw them recently, and they were very good and very informative.

I also like some of the examination videos he's done, like going over the Dominion War arc, the Prime Directive, even In the Pale Moonlight (review was great too).

Some favorite reviews would probably be some of the meaty bottle shows. The Drumhead, In the Pale Moonlight, and, most of all, Duet. They're great episodes and I like his commentary, especially of Duet. I'm sure there are more out there. I've watched them all so many times but that also makes it hard to remember too many specifics (but I do remember some and many come rushing back when I turn on the reviews again).

Anything and everything with Psycho Janeway and/or Archer the Paranoid Hobo.

...

To clarify, I mean Chuck's parody versions, not the actual versions in the show. I realized that might not have been clear reading my description.

I still love the "A Night in Sickbay" review. It is pure classic Chuck. Or the Flash Gordon movie. I like it when Chuck goes more for the comedic side of works rather than the informative. I can't say I enjoy the game reviews though, mainly because I don't really find playing video games that much fun, so watching someone play a game is even more boring than that to me. However, stuff like Voy: Threshold, or pretty much any S1 Ent is pure gold. And Farscape too, I love all of Chuck's farscape reviews.

The long form essays are the best I think. Hstory of comics, history of Lucas, Transformers, and the 10 minute background he'll do for most movies before getting to the review proper. The research and the context that puts to things is just so fantastic and informative, I feel like I'm actually learning something about the industry and art in the process, and it just shows how much time and work Chuck actually puts in, and that its not entirely just free-form riffing on things.

Favorite episodes are impossible to single out, though the Modoka series is a highlight. Anytime he does the assemblage of captains is pretty great.

Out of all his one off bits though, out of 1103 episodes, the one that just kills me, and I can't explain it, is the Nicotine Nemo bit from The Sword of Kahless. I have no idea why. Maybe its because its such a pointless random tangent, maybe because it goes on just long enough to start being absurd, maybe its the voice Chuck uses, or just they way he SAYS "Nicotine Nemo", but it just absolutely gets me. I've watched that one review more than any other just for that. There's better reviews and better episodes, but...

There's also a brick joke that only worked as the videos came out that has now been lost to actual airing order being the placed sequence... in one review Chuck stumbles over a tongue twister and comments he shouldn't put those in the script... and then the next episode had him flawlessly deliver a much more complicated one. I can't remember offhand which two episodes those were though.

Fixed that typo in the subject title, that was bothering me :D

I have to agree with most of OP's picks. Especially The Imperial Agent review and the "second Massacre plan" rant. DAO with the "Fail Elemental" Also the Madoka review where you could tell Chuck was falling in love with something new.

Overall the best work has to be his making of the Star Wars, the amount of work and new insight that gave into the creation of the franchise, one that has a lot of myths and misconceptions around it from both George Lucas's creative retelling and the fanbase's assumptions.
Thread ends here. Cut along dotted line.

Sorry about that typo, you'd figure that after God knows how many years I would have gotten over that stupid dyslexia BUT NOOO! I still end up making I won't even bothering count mistakes. At first I think I'm doing okay and then at the end of a sentence of I say the wrong Cranberry.

Now that all joking as been put aside I'm glad you liked my picks and I hope Chuck likes them as well. To date I can only think of two reviews where I ended up disagreeing with him which was Justice League Unlimited Epolgue in regards to Terry being Bruce's actual son and Atlantic: The Lost Empire, I actually like Milo.

And hey two out of 1103 shows, that's a pretty good track record. I'm also looking forward to his continuation of The Legend of Korra as I can't wait to see him tear Mako apart in Night of a Thousand Stars and to see him talk about Korra and Asami's relationship in general when Books 3 and 4 come out.

And again I really can't wait for him to review the Water Wars Trilogy from The Clone Wars and see his reaction to Jar Jar saving the future of the galaxy.

Also while I didn't include it as it not a review I really love his 10 Years of SF Debris. I've said it before and I'll say it again, that got me a little teary eyed. :')

For me, it's KOTOR. I just have an immense soft spot for that game, though I am more partial to the second one, I felt his look at both the Jedi and the Sith without judgment and trying to be as fair as possible was pretty awesome. I hope someday he reviews KOTOR 2!

I can't even rank them. His review of Madoka Magica caused me to watch that show (actually, I jumped ahead of him; the review of the second set of three caused my curiosity to see it to overpower me, and then I fell in love with it). Pretty much all of his game reviews are spot on for me, even the less-popular games like Technobabylon and Anna's Quest.

I suppose, to mention those people haven't already mentioned...

First, his review of the adaptation of "Hogfather". I loved that mini-series and he does it real justice. His opening to Part 2 with the recitation of Death's beautiful monologue to Azrael in the novel Reaper Man while "Baba Yetu" plays in the background? Just thinking about it puts a tear in my eye.

"The Rise and Fall of the Comic Empire" was just awesome, in a literal sense. And when he caps it off with the line about how the print comic seems to be dying, with little hope... but how that's usually when someone flies in to save the day? Beautiful.

And I too enjoyed his review of TLOK "The Sting", and I await his reviews of Book 3 and 4. Even if they're probably years away. Given I joined the Spacebattles group contribution for Books 2 and 3 and donated for the last three episodes of Book 4, I think my eagerness is rather obvious. ;)

The comics special, and the entire Madoka Magica review, are probably my favorites. I say 'probably' because there is a lot of material over ten years, and I will inevitably remember something else about an hour after I've hit the 'submit' button.
