Is it darker than DS 9?
Yes.

"darker" isn't the right word. There's no reset button and the status quo shifts often so there's more tension as conflicts aren't always resolved by the end of the episode and they've killed off characters that would be permanent in the other series, but there's no BSG style baby neck snap moments.

There's a lot of torture.
There's what amounts to cannibalism.
There's terrorism.
There's racism.
There are consequences to actions.

With the possible exception of cannibalism, all of those things have featured in Star Trek on numerous occasions. Especially on DS9.

1. TNG has an episode devoted to a realistic depiction of interrogation, which includes psychological torture. Other episodes across the series have examples of physical torture. Point?
2. ...Yeah, you've got a point on this one.
3. Again, across the series there are plenty of cases of terrorism sparking off plots (and entire gambit collisions that can be impressive.) Point?
4. While not present so much in TOS (it's more into sexism), you do see examples of racism in DS9 and ENT. There's arguably some cases in TNG, post Wolf 359. Point?
5. ...Wait WHAT!? Consequences are dark? The heck did you smoke?
6. You left out the hot Klingon-on-Klingon sex. More importantly, how can I forget again!?

Agreed, although if you rewatch DS9's "Blood Oath"... that's established canon. :?

And in DS9 / Voyager, the terrorists were even sometimes the good guys.

Spock was on the receiving end of quite a bit of racism in TOS, mostly from McCoy, occasionally from Kirk, and most egregiously from that guy in the Romulan submarine episode.

To be fair, while Star Trek had those previously, except where you noted, it was scattered into 703 episodes. STD has managed to get all those in by episode #15.

It is also more graphic in its depictions.

I like Discovery, and am looking forward to the final part of this series.
