Enterprise: Cold Front

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

Enterprise: Cold Front

Was just rewatching this review today. I think one of the major signs that they really did not have any plans for this Temporal Cold War was the fact that Daniels was not seen before this episode. They didn't even have to have him do anything major. There were so many eating scenes. Just show him delivering food a few times. Let us see this guy just there in the background. Then when he says he's a time traveler, the viewer can wonder just what he's been up to all this time.

Star Trek Online handled this so much better in the TOS origin. Daniels is there, as a recurring member of your away team, and then tells you he's a time traveler. I of course knew who he was already, having seen him in this episode and seeing him interact with my other Captains. But having him there in the background in the TOS era was a much better build up than he's just there and a time traveler in the same episode.

That was the problem with Enterprise in general, there wasn't a plan as the studio wanted a show to follow on the next fall after Voyager wrapped which left them scrambling. Braga actually advocated that Star Trek took a year out so they could look to do something fresh.

I suggest watching if you haven't already the "Uncharted Territory" features that are on the Enterprise Blu-Rays. Braga is remarkably upfront and honest on the whole thing.

I rather liked "Cold Front" and the way it left it ambiguous whether Daniels and Silik really were the good guy / bad guy that they respectively appeared to be, with all of Daniels' cagey comments ("Depends on what you call 'Earth'") and Silik's saving the ship. It's a pity they didn't go any further with that.

Really, they should have known better. Writing time travel is hard. If it's not kept simple and sweet, then all you end up doing is throwing jargon at the wall. It's another form of technobabble.
