I didn't want to clutter the forum with a individual threads on every single film coming out that fits into speculative fiction, especially when there is no guarantee that people are interested enough in any one film to discuss it at length before release. So I am setting up this thread for people to discuss what's coming to the cinema.

Crew dynamics are already coming to the fore...and I am fairly sure the Captain isn't going to last long...though he may have the joy of dying to a none Xenomorph/Engineer related issue. The Android, Walter, seems nice...but after David I'm not sure he can be trusted.

Visually interesting but not a lot to go on. That said I am more excited for this film than I am for Alien: Covenant. That's not a slam against Alien...just a statement of my own interests.

By Luc Besson so the visuals should prove interesting. I know this is based off a comic series but I'm not familiar with the source material...and have chosen to remain unfamiliar with it till I see the movie, so I can judge it on it's own merits.

Re: Upcoming Films
What no Transformer: The last Knight? They have to make a good one some day right?
Valerian is the biggest wildcard right now. I am not familiar with the source material right now, so I am not sure of the plot. I am almost afraid to say it but it looked like the trailers of Jupiter Ascending, but I think Luc Besson will have a better, more consistent plot than the Siblings. I will watch the Alien and Bladerunner movie just because that is what they are.

I made a post about this topic on my personal Tumblr, so I'll just post it here. http://thehumanarkle.tumblr.com/post/15 ... im-looking
Note: of them, I've already seen LEGO Batman, and if I'm lucky I may get to see Get Out this weekend.

Re: Upcoming Films
I do not really care for the original "Bladerunner" (or director's 9th/10th cut, whichever one I saw) so maybe this will "fix" some of my issues by expanding the thing beyond the original's limitations.
"Get Out" is the biggest upcoming on my radar currently.
I actually feel I need to catch up on things from last year.

Re: Upcoming Films
Denis Villeneuve has shown himself to be a strong director with a very good eye for visuals (plus the cinematographer is Roger Deakins, one of the best in the business) and a good storyteller, so I have pretty high hopes for Blade Runner 2049. Provided the plot makes sense, at least.
I love Alien and Aliens, but I don't have high hopes for Alien: Covenant. I was looking forward to the now apparently defunct Neill Blomkamp Alien project, but I thought Prometheus was only so-so. Ridley Scott is another great visual director, obviously, but not a great storyteller. This looks like a tired retread of familiar tropes.
I don't know anything about Valerian.

Re: Upcoming Films
I'm totally up for Valerian. This is a movie being made by the same guy who made The Fifth Element, and is an adaptation of the same comic that inspired The Fifth Element. Plus Luc Besson is a good director in general, so I have more faith than I would with some others.
In other words: you can kind of retroactively think of T5E as a demo reel for Valerian. Although I'm not personally familiar with the Valerian comic specifically, I love T5E for how well it captures the look and feel of those wild French and Belgian SFF comics that'd get published in Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant back in the day, and the Valarian trailer promises more of that, so I'm totally there.
I'm indifferent to Alien: Covenant. I'm pretty burned out on the Alien franchise in general. Prometheus had my hopes up that my interest would be rekindled by opening new and interesting directions, but when it came out those hopes were sort of let down (there's is some cool stuff in Prometheus, but the whole kinda crumbles under a lot of muddled/bad writing decisions). I don't have much faith in the people involved, beyond Ridley Scott's talent for visuals, and too much of the trailer has the vibe of a soft reboot of Prometheus that learned the wrong lessons from the first go. I'd much rather move forward by redeeming the good parts of Prometheus with a great straight sequal, rather ran trying to erase/ignore the good stuff along with the bad by doing a soft do-over. Also I'd kinda rather see a spin off movie series about the Engineers, rather than a prequel about the Xenomorphs.
I'm ambivalent about Blade Runner 2049. After a cursory look at the people involved, I'm kind of expecting a 2010-type sequel at best (competent and decent in it's own right, but nowhere near living up to it's predecessor), and at worst... a poorly constructed fan-service conga of the sort that's become distressingly common of late.

Baby Groot, alone, is probably going to put a lot of butts in theater seats on opening day...

Re: Upcoming Films
I hope Valerian plays in 2D near me.
Re: Upcoming Films
I've now seen three of the movies on my list; LEGO Batman, Get Out, and Logan (in that order).
Ranking those films...
#3: LEGO Batman
#2: Logan
#1: Get Out.
Get Out is so good you guys, seriously. See it if you haven't already and if it's still playing at your local theater. This is the best horror movie I've seen since Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.
