Transformers: The Movie (1986)

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

....what, I saw this when I was fucking 3, 4 years old! I had my toddler heart crushed by the sight of Optimus Prime dying, and thirty years later the scar is still on my psyche!

Thankfully I didn't see "Dark Awakening" until many years later, otherwise... urgh.
At the same time, The Return of Optimus Prime was amazing.

He touched a magic artifact, and suddenly all his flaws from earlier just disappeared. There is no recognition of his errors, no earnest attempt to become better than he was. A wizard did it, and now he's the leader. Hurray!
Honestly, all of the band of five could be summed up in one word.

Hot Rod=Douche
Springer=Prick
Ultra Magnus=Tool
Kup=Geezer
Arcee=Chick

As an aside:

Hm, this is one of those movies that was before my time. Not literally mind you. I was alive when it came out, just not that into transformers. By the time I got into transformers "G2" was on the air. I mostly watched it and GoBots reruns - those were the days, the days when I used to wake up at 7 in the morning to watch half an hour of Transformers before going to kindergarten.

Then came Beast Wars, that I actually refused to watch at first - I was more of a ReBoot guy, ok, I was a ReBoot fan(atic) that when because of some unknown reason the TV station that was showing ReBoot moved it to 6 in the morning on Sundays used to wake up at 5:55 so as not to miss a ReBoot rerun. But beast wars was good - once I started watching it.

Then came The Unicron Trilogy... now those were my Transformers. Ah, Vector Prime, the best Prime. It's funny really, when Armada first got started by first thought was of Beast wars, but it soon turned to good memories of the "G2" version I had seen as a kid. And that first episode of Armada - look, I'm not saying The Unicron Trilogy was perfect, but the way Megatron behaves in that first episode always, ALWAYS captures my imagination and makes me wonder if he really is going to be the villain of the series (he is).

Then the trilogy came to and end and I was left pining for more Transformers... and then IT came out in theaters... thank Primus I had never watched G1 and could cleanse my pallet with it and this movie.

Now, regarding this review:

HOW DARE YOU SIR! How dare you impeach the good name of ... the bad name of Unicron by comparing him to that Marvel hack Galactus? Galactus is nothing more then a hack, a two bit copy of Unicron - one that appeared literally 20 years before Unicron, but a copy nonetheless! WHY SIR! You are almost as bad as that fellow that keeps pissing on the transformers franchise, what was his name again? ah yes: Michael "I haven't made a good movie in over a decade" Bay.

And a final note to people that wonder why "G2" is in quotes. After Transformers ended, but before the Beast wars continuity Hasbro technically reaired episodes of G1 as a "G2" cartoon. Not only were most "G2" toys reused G1 models with new coats of paint but the cartoon itself was nothing more then reruns of select G1 episodes. I hear the comic book was actually a continuation of G1, but the cartoon series - to which I was exposed - was just a repackaging of G1. So I technically grew up on an incomplete, inferior version of G1.

Edit... ok, maybe I wasn't alive when the movie came out, or when the G1 cartoon ended. BUT I was alive when the G1 toy line was still going strong.

The thing about Unicron vs. Galactus is Galactus is treated as ABOVE GOOD AND EVIL and even an ally of the heroes on occassion.

Fuck that.

Unicron is just evil and no attempt is made to say he's anything but a genocidal monster.

Which automatically puts him above.

Destroying Unicron, also, makes Hot Rod actually look like he could be Optimus Prime's successor.

That's something else ... in later Transformers lore, Unicorn was called the Chaos Bringer. How exactly is eating everything chaotic? If there's nothing left, then everything's just empty and somewhat orderly. Not chaotic at all.

Well it disrupts the order of Primus.

Who is kind of useless during all of this.

You'd also think Unicron would have tried to eat him first.

I am 46 years old, and Optimus Prime's death might still be the death that most impacted me (including real life deaths). Its certainly in the top 3. I STILL have the original action figure - I lost the box over the decades, and his hands sadly.

I always tell people there has only ever been one Transformers movie made, and it was in 1986 :)

And oh yea, even back then I knew Hot Rod sucked, and Rodimus Prime was a whiny useless jerk. His leadership skills sucked so bad, Optimus had to come back from the dead twice!

Ok, slightly off-topic, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers the Galaxy Rangers. I mean, if you want to talk about some seriously messed up stuff that squeaked past the censors and into a kids' cartoon, look no further. And this was on TV!

Oh, come now, it's Galaxy Rangers, they're as sanitary as Bravestarr... well, as clean as that one drug episode we all remember from Bravestarr.

For my own opinion I actually do like that Unicron's motives are never elaborated on and that he seems to be doing all this seemingly for the sake of it. Unicron is pretty much the transformers version of a Cthulhu, a creature of seemingly cosmic power who sees mortals as tools at best and nothing at worse. Also I utterly love Orson Welles' performance as Unicron almost sounds bored when describing itself, how he almost never angry and when It's pants to be darken time.
