What battlefields/campaings should be visisted in the next WW2 game to feel fresh?

Post by Karha of Honor »

Since even Battlefield will do it after having a WW1 game... I would say The Soviet 45 Manchurian Campaing, Operation Battle Axe vs Vichy. Play against the Itlaians in Ethiopia, start with Italy's before WW2 conquest than become some sort of African OSS asset, play a Finnish soldier during the 39 Russian offensive.

1.) Why is this in Sci-fi and Fantasy?

2.) I am personally tired of WW2 stories and video games, yes I get that America is still extremely proud over its service to that war but surely there are other conflicts throughout human history and the twentieth century that can be explored. I respect the Call of Duty franchise for visiting several of them even if they aren't very realistic or historically accurate.

I don't know what kind of game you can make out of the Rape of Nanjing. Maybe an adventure game where you run a consulate and are trying to save people?

Shtrafbats (Soviet penal battalions) after Stalin's Order No. 227. Fighting for one insane dictator against soldiers forced to fight for another insane dictator, where retreat could end in summary execution. Grim and gritty is "in," right?

And no, this is seriously not a reference to any current political leaders.

Now that the board is a bit more functional I can quote again so I'll respond :)

I think it would be different to start with a failed defense and escape from Nanking to follow a campaign through China. You could choose to go Nationalist or Communist, take you through places often ignored and certainly not much explored by WWII history or gaming (beyond the likes of Hearts of Iron).

I don't feel like it needs a change in location so much as a change in genre. I'd love a spy-oriented or story-rich RPG type WW2 game. I don't know that none of those exist, but I haven't played any.

Obviously there's been a ton of emphasis put on battles the US had even a small part of, so some battles have been overlooked even in shooters. Heck, even something like the Battle of Stalingrad, the largest battle of history, doesn't get nearly the amount of attention in the western world (certainly not the US) that it would have if it were American or British troops involved.

Call of Duty did Stalingrad at least 3 times.
