Jeebus guys. Spoilers :(

I'll edit the title for the thread.

Well yes. A whole bunch of people with no respect for actual PTSD claimed to be triggered by just about everything when really they were just offended. That is why those people are mocked in these memes.

A worthy cause I say. The memes must flow.
Thread ends here. Cut along dotted line.

Re: Far Cry 5

I bought this, and have been enjoying it, but I'm only about 2/3rds of the way through. This is actually my first Far Cry game, and it's because it's set in Montana. So I didn't know what to expect.

Personal history: after high school, I enlisted, and was stationed in Montana for the majority of my enlistment. I was exposed to a rather different world than I was used to, being a city boy Texan, but I grew to rather enjoy a lot of the state. When my enlistment ended, I moved back to Texas, and rejoined my friends and family.

So, I viewed this game as rather an alternate universe wherein I stayed in Montana and just joined a local police force, making my own life there. It's rather interesting to see what they got right about the state and what they seemed to ignore. For instance, it's a shame we never meet any Hutterites and see how they're reacting to this craziness. Or that the local Native American tribe is tied into the local militia, which, while amazingly progressive, seems far fetched if you knew the actual relations between the two. And we don't really see their population given a real voice in how they are.

I found it fitting that if one cult/militia started a war, several others would fight back, as there are all kinds of flavors of militias in Montana, mostly based on white supremacism, and various differences with them.

I also wondered why, if you have access to a plane, why not just fly to Missoula or Great Falls and call the cavalry. Even if the Seed family has taken over a few radio dispatchers, and somehow shutdown the local internet, a smart phone recording will be evidence enough to get the National Guard rolling.

A missed opportunity is the harsh winters, as the game clearly takes place in the summer, whereas the rest of the year Montana has a lot of precipation, whether rain, snow, or ice, making the place vastly different to navigate.

That said, Montana is a HORRIBLE place to pick for surviving WWIII. There are hundreds of nuclear launch facilities there, making it a prime target for nuclear missiles, and plans to survive there by anyone building a bunker are rather foolhardy. But a game set in Alaska probably wouldn't have been as appealing.

Gameplay wise, the game is fun. Just enjoying the countryside, by river, car, plane, helicopter, or on foot. Too bad there isn't a way to ride around on horseback, as I did while up there a few times. Planning my way through Peggie territory, planning how to storm a Peggie canp, whether hard and fast, or through stealth is fun.

My major gripes with the game:

I do run into problems. I find it ridiculous the amount of times I'm attacked by wildlife. You'd think humans had only been in the area a few months, rather than centuries with the way they attack you repeatedly, and seem to have such a huge population to throw at you. I understand why, the wilderness might get boring otherwise, but it felt like I had some sort of animal magnet glued to me. It also felt odd that I never once ran into a gopher.

The enemy planes, goodness the enemy planes. If you don't have a flying companion unlocked yet, and you're in tier 3, your life is hell. You will need to have a plane or helicopter guarding you at all times or your fishing trip will end badly because you kept on making progress in a territory. Who knew cults had their own private Air Force?

The combat interrupting talking. Trying to get a mission, updating a mission, shopping, or finishing a mission always has to be put on hold because there's one cultist half a mile away, and everyone acts as if they're at the Battle of the Alamo, fighting tooth and nail to survive. This often turns into a hunt for the lone enemy just to advance the game. I would greatly enjoy a Fallout 3 pausing of everything just so that I can move on with what I'm doing.

The abductions. I don't mind cutscenes, or places where I have to advance the story. But getting abducted 9 times? A bit more variety would have helped so much. Since they have already taken over the local television and radio stations, use that more. It would have been the same speech, without the 'Why don't you just shoot them?' issue constantly happening, and feeling less like a war, and more like a really creepy version of a sleepover.

As for the ending. Yeah, I'm saying that you're just on Bliss/brainwashed, and that the nukes never happened. You just snapped out of it after dealing with the cult.

Still, overall, a fun game. It just needs some tweaking, and maybe some rewrites.

You are still mockign real PTSD sufferers, and you don't actually KNOW what somebody's triggers are. A lot of "weird" triggers are still totally real and valid. One person is triggered by the smell of eggs because after she was raped she tried desperately to pretend everything was normal and cooked some eggs for breakfast, and those two experiences have become inextricably linked. Neurosis doesn't work in a logical when, and when you talk shit about "lol triggered", you are, intentionally or not, talking shit about veterans and rape survivors.

Faxmoden1, it's funny you say about Montana being a nuclear target.

(The bunkers are obviously ex-nuclear silos)

Quite a few of your complaints play into the plot but I did notice there's a weird lack of white supremacists either to fight or in the militias.

Well you can't make white supremacists villains, or the alt-right will get pissy. And you can't make white supremacists heroes, or antifa will get pissy. In conclusion, you just "forget" to include them.

But apparently you make the conservative people in the game act like regular people and suddenly the left are screaming about how this game isn't critical enough.

Imagine that. You make a game set in a place, put just enough cliche red neck in it but not over the top cartoon Wolfenstein 2 level and you have a game full of real people to relate to...and you're saying this is a bad thing?

You know gamers are just guys who just want to play and have fun, not focused too much of social commentaries

Apparently this game "confuses" a bunch of the major gaming "journalist" sites

MAFIA III defied this and it was glorious. Weirdly, though, apparently there are some actual doofuses in gaming who think murdering the Klan is a bad thing. Believe me, I live in the Deep South and I wasn't aware degenerate methhead criminals were a protected status.

Honestly, I wish we had Jacob Seed as running his own thing. It had been interesting if he was a white supremecist and sexist crazy person while the rest of his "family" were hippies who wanted to save everyone. Then again, I like these kind of enemy versus enemy conflicts.

It's ridiculous, I agree. Like I said, you have a game based on the Branch Davidian Siege combined with Manson vs. Militiamen but somehow that's not political because apparently everything has to be about the current election.

I like politics in my game. I just don't like stupid politics and the politics here are subdued enough but interesting.

"Real". You're making the assumption I haven't had personal or professional contact with people clinically diagnosed with PTSD. They can figure out the context of who is being mocked because they are functioning adults. That you claim you don't and you're speaking on their behalf is just just proof that you have zero authority on this matter.

Your post is written like someone that knows just enough to act outraged on the internet about a subject but not enough to act in a manner that is of any positive benefit to anyone involved.

Don't reply to this. Bring this to PM if you want to discuss. I'm not going to hijack the FarCry 5 thread for it.

The difference as I see it here is between politics and the worst kind of divisive political activism that seeks to strawman or demonise their political opponents.

Reading through some of those "video game journalism" articles the impression is that people are upset that it was a missed opportunity to denounce conservatives or propagandise.

In any case I don't think that UbiSoft either directly or indirectly telling half the US population that the game isn't for them would be a good business plan.

Well, if the Seeds are trying to preserve humanity or whatever, picking the spot where the bombs will directly hit you is a bad idea. And since WWIII is apparently a thing, they could have picked better locations.
