Technically he got 15 months in jail for providing/importing recovery discs that you can make for free on your own, or pay MicroSoft $25 for a replacement of the one they gave you when you bought the operating system.
It is still a crock (I don't see how he is actually costing MS anything), but it seems worthwhile to be specific about the official rationale. It has to do with the rather stringent nature of software licensing where something that can be done basically for free becomes illegal because the license holder says it may be done one way, but not another...
