I have never seen that interpretation.
As Spider-Man had to get rid of the thing via Church bell exorcism, I always thought the interpretation was that it gave an emotional high by boosting your worst impulses.

I have hit a real dry spell in writing, because having a job does that. I have written two blogs in recent times though.

I review a fantasy novel that I thought was going to be "The Stand" mixed with "The Dresden Files". Ultimately, that is still the best short hand comparison I can make... But I also have to say it was NOT FOR ME.
