This used to be a successful time of year, though. Every Star Wars movie in the first two trilogies did just fine in May.
IV - May 25, 1977
V - May 21, 1980
VI - May 25, 1983

Unless you specifically mean too soon after the last movie, which could affect fatigue in the franchise.

It makes me have to stay at work past 1 AM, which is my primary complaint. That and I can get other things done when I'm not spending extra time at the theater.

I was confused for a second, then realised you'd said "Matinee" not "Manitee"
I'm off to see Solo in an hour. My friends who have seen it already all gave it a thumbs-up (for them that is 3.5+/5). I'm not sure if it's a UK thing, but I've not met many people over here who really dislike Star Wars The Last Jedi. Personally, I preferred it to The Force Awakens as it tried new things. In my mind, where The Force Awakens left off, there was no way that Rian Johnson could have moved forward that would leave fans happy, so he went with subversion, and frankly it seemed in character.
"We are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters."
So, i was reading online reviews of this movie and just noticed that the droid in Solo is called L337.
*Epic face palm moment*
What? Was P33WN3R too long or something? No seriously, who thought this was clever? This is the kind of nickname a seven year old would come up with for a Halo 2 alias two console generations ago.
Sorry if the reaction seems extreme, but i cannot fathom how comedy this bad can happen in a big budget movie. Something like this would only work in a satire or comedy skit. Yes i'm thinking of the Halo Legends short Odd One Out. 1337 was a gag name and character from start to finish. The name was a joke, he was the punchline. Unless this character is equally goofy or derivative, This is just a painful attempt at comedy.

I mean mainly in comparison with the other Disney Star Wars releases in December, in combination with TLJ's recent release and the amount of competition coming from other blockbusters so far this year. With Black Panther, Infinity War, and Deadpool 2 all coming out in the span of a few months and movies like Jurassic World 2 and Incredibles 2 right around the corner, I just don't think there's enough excitement to go around. Solo really came across as pretty meh to begin with, so it gets to be the odd man out.
I don't think that totally explains why Solo is underperforming so badly as the sole release this weekend, but it's all just speculation on my part.
I wish they'd saved the droid rights thing for a Leia movie. It's not a bad idea in and of itself, but I'd rather see it in a movie with the someone who is (1) a politician, meaning legal rights are part of her actual job, (2) has parents who are politicians, whom she may deeply love but not see eye-to-eye on, (3) is used to having subordinates, and (4) grew up in a house full of servants, many of them probably droids, and some of whom might have helped raise her.
Instead, it's in a heist movie.
Again, it's not a bad idea There was a senate until "A New Hope," so I think there was something quasi-democratic in there. And if you can build thousands of new voters an hour, each with values that make them lean toward one faction... You don't need stormtroopers.

No it's not a bad idea, similar ideas have been explored in the EU with all droids requiring a memory wipe every six months to keep them from becoming too sentient and thus easier to work with, but with certain droid owners like Luke preferring not to do so and thinking of their droids as friends. Some however get annoyed with R2 and Threepio feeling like they are way too entitled and difficult.
This was even hinted at in the Prequels when Bail has C3P0's memory wiped after taking ownership.
But on that understanding, L3 should appreciate having a master like Lando that doesn't just shut her off and wipe her memory to get rid of her complaining. While I haven't seen the movie, by what I've heard sounds like she's just a nattering ungrateful preteen with an awful metatextual name and yet another British accent.
And why do the new female leading characters need a British accent. What is up with that?

guessing an out-of-touch 70 year old man who thinks he's still hip to the lingo. Rubber stamped by an (arguably) getting-out-of-touch Kathleen Kennedy.
Septuagenarian who still has the magic touch: George Miller.
Lawrence Kasdan? can't say as I haven't seen Solo---nor do I have any desire too. Even if someone gave me a DVD of it. I don't want to ruin 1980's Han Solo.
