Absolutely agree that you don't have to slavishly adapt the original work to make a great adaptation.

The cold open for this suggests a movie / subject matter review, and we get an anime review instead?

It's fine to gush about a favourite show, but saying "[K-ON!] is considered, by anyone who knows what they're talking about, to be a masterpiece" is a step too far.

K-On is only considered controversial to praise in the West. In Japan it has become just as common for Anime creators to say it's what's inspired them as Metropolis and King Kong are in America. And that is why Digi is very defensive towards it. I also like it, but my favorite of the Genre is Lucky Star.
