TNG: A Fistful of Datas

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

I always liked this episode a great deal. It had a fun premise, worf took the primitive and violent west like he should, Troi was useful for once, the comedy worked, and Brent Spiner shined. I would have given it a 7 just because, while it was nothing fantastic, it still shined and worked as a silly and fun outing for the show.

As a Canadian, I spit my coffee at the Hoser Bandidos joke. Well done, eh

As a Texan, I approve of this episode. Even though it's in South Dakota.

...I blame Canada for any and all inconsistencies.

Seriously, though, this is a pretty entertaining episode. It's just silly enough to be funny, it's just serious and cerebral enough to fit in with the expectation of Star Trek, and it's got enough action to keep one on the edge of their seat. Add in Troi being used well for once, and, well...yeah. I personally rate this one an 8/10, but that's just my opinion.

Also, the ENT trilogy around the ancestor of Data's creator? YES. I love the Augment arc in ENT. It's some of the best writing on the show, in my opinion - much like this, a great mix of cerebrality, action, and world building that ties directly into TOS.

It is a fun episode and one that isn't ''fun'' like so many others are. Worf is a natural fit, it gives him some time with Alexander in what would have been a good way of bonding (had he not been kidnapped halfway through) Troi isn't just reading people's feelings and wearing a catsuit... that had to be done, it's the law of the West.

It feels like Brent Spiner had a lot of fun on this one (he's a big western fan, if I remember correctly), and the actors having fun helps to make the whole thing more entertaining. It helps if you like westerns as well (I do). No one would mistake it as one of the greats of the show, but there isn't much wrong with it and the humor does land in a comfortable sort of way.

This episode was silly fun done quite well.

It's stupid, but it's stupid in that "This is entertai- bahahahaha!" kind of way, while still having some risk to the characters.

That the characters all get good dialog and roles make it a gem too, even if it IS a little rough and makes faces at you if you hold it the wrong way.

Agreed. It's fun and entertaining, but more of a nice diversion than anything to write home about.

Also, we need another user named Angriest Angel, just in case you go rogue and start shooting down Ships. The Shippers need their crack pairings! (I kid! I kid! I'm also a fan of Space: Above and Beyond, and The Angriest Angel is one of my favorite episodes.) ;p ;D

And in particular, I do love just how much more beautiful Marina Sirtis is in actual clothes as opposed to the pastel cleavage pajamas that she wore for the majority of the show. Jeri Ryan and Jolene Blalock were the same to varying degrees whenever their catsuits were thankfully replaced by actual clothes. T'Pol aside, bringing in real, utilitarian uniforms was something that Enterprise should definitely be commended for.

I think that this episode actually has something in common with ''11.59'' from a couple of weeks ago regarding the idea of potentially toxic nostalgia. The old west was an horrific place that has been romanticized in popular culture to the same level as the Medieval or Ancient Rome. But whilst it makes for fantastic films and videogames, the reality of actually living somewhere like this, especially for those of us in the 21st century who are used to conveniences, technology, supermarkets, the internet, equality etc. it would be an absolute horror show.

That western code based on honour that Chuck spoke of is a great example of romanticism as like the chivalric code of the Knights centuries before, its a combination of make-believe and exaggeration born from the likes of John Wayne films.
Yeah, I can't imagine the number of ways you could get yourself killed in the Old West; people die at the fair, for goodness sake.

I was wondering if Chuck would forget the "ancient chinese secret, huh?" and he didn't! Pleased me to death. Also pleased me how he scored the episode so high. Yeah, this is one I like, despite how silly it is. LOL.

The funny thing about the Western genre is that its tropes and romanticization started overwriting the real history even AS that time period was still going on, rather than after the fact. Any movie you see with white cowboys and lots of straight people is a consequence of that.

I'd rather argue, that this is a direc tresult of reality, at least in regards to movies playing in or about the USA, Canada und Europe (well, minus cowboys when it comes to Europe), just as much as I'd expect a movie about or playing in China, Japan or Korea, to mostly have east-asian looking people who are in the overwhelming majority of the cases, portrayed as straight and so on.
