TNG: A Fistful of Datas

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

Some evils of the past should be remembered, like the millions of mass rapists of WWII who swarmed over Eastern Europe raping and pillaging and stealing in abundance. Two million to perhaps fifteen million raped women and female children. And their attackers never once faced a day in a courtroom for their crimes. They just happily went back home, took wives, had undeserved sex with their partners, and made more children alongside the rape babies many of them created.

I get what you're saying, however. That there is the potential to put too much blame on white men for crimes of the past. But at the same time, how have things improved? Perhaps somewhat. But very little in the grand scheme of things. At least as I see it. I mean, privileged white men still have most of the power to a degree in the United States, but it doesn't make white men the devil like some think. It's just a result of institutional racism and sexism that's built over the centuries.

And the women's rights movement would have got nowhere if the men back then didn't support it. That should be acknowledged and praised, yes I understand. There is the potential to abuse that, to praise women for how far we've come and only women. But at the same time, it's supposed to be about building a new and more perfect world. And relations between men and women are far from improved as well as we'd like to think, and here mostly I am referring to the sexual and partnering aspect. The fact any man will ever still rape a woman in the 21st century is sickening. You'd think we'd be past it by now, but we aren't...

Well, I liked this episode, and I liked the review.

Then this thread happened.

What's wrong with this thread? There is nothing wrong with having a debate about politics as long as it remains civil which this so far is. I value differing points of view even if I do not agree with them because that is the only way to form a well-rounded opinion and I would argue that Chuck has personally fostered this approach over the last ten years.

True. None of us have started name-calling or hurling slurs or curse words, as far as I can see. Besides, I get very angry at the idea some people have that there's this widespread movement to demonize white people. White people are a majority. Of course people are gonna be more critical of them and the power we've built over the centuries. Removing that for a more equal world won't be achieved overnight. But it doesn't make white people satan.

OTOH, the women's rights movement wouldn't have been necessary at all if men back then hadn't shut them out

Very good point, honestly. Though the point that men back then were privileged, thus their support of trying to get women acknowledged as equals is just as impressive is still valid. Without any of them, women wouldn't be where they are today.

I'd suggest starting a thread in the News forum to discuss the suffrage movement and the like so we can keep this thread more on topic.

But the suffrage movement is news, it happened a long time ago. It's... olds.

Which is why I am using the phrasing ''thousands of'' men instead of ''all'' men. No debate should boil down to an either/all sum game.

Seriously. Take the train wreck to the news or somewhere else off-topic.
