Well, while I'm suspicious of the media, my mom did tell me, and admittedly I am hearing this all secondhand, how there was audio of screaming kids from these camps, from the cages. Sounds like the kind of thing Arpaio had done in Arizona.

IIRC, the kids are kept in cages/cells while being processed, but they aren't kept there for the duration of their detention. They're moved to a more comfortable location after processing.A lot of stories about this conflate the two locations, either deliberately or not.

In part ICE needs to verify that the kids really are the kids of those parents. That may be true in the majority of cases, but child trafficking is a thing, and child sex trafficking is a thing, too.

Given their record for misplacing the children in their custody and their refusal to let reporters see the girls, I rather doubt they are terribly intent on stopping sex traffickers.
