There is a certain ''heroin fix'' quality about all of this, isn't there? ''just one more gay character...''

Re: Star Trek (DIS): Despite Yourself
Well, speaking as a socialist...
...given that Trek is traditionally an intentionally very social-justice-y show that tries to have as diverse and "progressive" a cast as possible, STD certainly ought to have a cast who make DS9 look like an old white boys' club, right? I mean, it's been over 20 years since DS9; in the late '90s, gay people couldn't get married here in the USA and the President was fearmongering about "super-predators", whereas now gay people can get married...
...and the President's still a racist lecher, only he's more open about both, but still, our society's moved towards social justice, why hasn't Trek?

Granted, but instead the showrunners take inspiration from Call of Duty and apply a Sepia filter instead.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 6:15 pmOh and the ship loses its blue filter and has actual lightning.

I do, but the "anti" crowd has so much vitriol that I don't really enjoy participating in the discussions. I suspect I'm not the only one.
Re: Star Trek (DIS): Despite Yourself
Me too. Among the bits I hate:
Subtitles: Movie 2 starts with people talking Klingonee and subtitles. Then, having extablished the Mood, they smoothly apply the Babel Fish and people talk English. STD is all subtitles.
Ivan the Terrible is among the Greatest Movies of all Time. There is an exciting story, so you enjoy reading the subtitles.
STD Klingonee conversations are always:
Lizard 1: I'm a Nazi.
Lizard 2: I'm a Nazi AND I'm Fuehrer.
Lizard 1: No. I'm Fuehrer.
Klingons??? WTF A story about Nazi lizards. Trek has already got Cardassi to be Nazi lizards. Klingons have "evolved" from swarthy people through rubber foreheads to lizards and back again over a couple of generations. All through Racial Purity???
We are expected to respect Worf's respect for the Klingon code of Honour?
STD Klingons are so primitive that when the captain orders engage warp drive, then all the lizards poke their legs through the bottom of the hull and run like a Flintdstones' car.
War: B5 and DS9 started with exploration and after we the Audience started caring about the Characters, then the War started. STD started with the War against generic Nazis. If "Klingons" had been interesting Nazis, then fine; but generic Nazis - meh.

While not played by a Trans actress, there's no reason Tilly couldn't be a trans character or just about anyone.

You believe that Starfleet would willingly handicap its own high ranking captains from the knowledge that such things are out there and could harm not only their ships and crews but also leave the door open to wide spread annexation of Federation space? Or is this another excuse for Enterprise level stupidity allowing for continuity since nothing else could?Durandal_1707 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 29, 2018 5:53 am What? You mean to imply that after the Federation barely avoided destruction due in part to a collaboration with an evil overlord from the Mirror Universe, involving a genocidal attempt to destroy the Klingon homeworld, all made possible by a doomed ship that hasn't actually set the whole thing in motion by getting lost yet, that they wouldn't want this information made public? It'd never happen. I call shenanigans!

In every show.
Re: Star Trek (DIS): Despite Yourself
That would be a can of worms ti tackle, especially given recent upsets regarding cis actors okaying trans characters, its tricky.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 10:46 pm While not played by a Trans actress, there's no reason Tilly couldn't be a trans character or just about anyone.
Given whats been shown before with 23rd century cosmetic surgery, its reasonable to assume that they would have perfected the process for reassigning gender meaning there'd be no discernable difference between trans and cis gender characters.
Thus, fir casting you either actor who can 'pass' as their preferred gender or q cis actor of said gender. the former limits your casting choices (especially when you factor in other preferred traits such as age) and the latter puts the transgender casting question spotlight onto Star Trek, the kind of attention the producers may bot want.
It should certainly happen eventually but I can imagine them feeling like: "damned if we do, damned if we don't".

Starfleet insist upon being inefficient because Starfleet ain't military and somehow they think military is efficient.Veggietrekker wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 11:33 pmYou believe that Starfleet would willingly handicap its own high ranking captains from the knowledge that such things are out there and could harm not only their ships and crews but also leave the door open to wide spread annexation of Federation space? Starfleet signed a treaty that everyone else can have cloaked ships and Fed can't.
Starfleet signed a treaty with Cardassi that Cardassi would be officially at peace with Fed until Ben Sisko genocides the Maquis. Cardassi will only declare war versus Fed when Fed has killed all of Cardassi' enemies.
