They are leftists not just idiots?
They made it official?
It's a Clerks reference. Star Wars: Bloodline went out of its way to establish Star Wars politics is completely different from real life politics. The Resistance is left of the First Order but that's because they're fascist and right of the (now extinct) Old Republic since they were conservative people who believed the First Order were....well, Nazis and not cosplayers.

He is the last high ranking competent officer in a sinking Rebellion.
That's the thing, though, he's not. He's literally just lost his high rank and been busted down to Commander (Major).

Well, this only makes the New Republic look ludicrously inept. After all, America has a very large force keeping an eye on North Korea and used to have an even larger force keeping an eye on the Soviet Union, but the New Republic not bothering to match this ridiculously grave threat.
Yeah, that's literally Leia's job it turns out as the Resistance was formed to try to figure out how the First Order (which is publicly a bunch of worlds that seceded from the New Republic to form a Neo-Imperial state along the Unknown Region's border). The novelizations contain a short bit where Leia is considered alarmist and ridiculous for believing the First Order has been building a massive military and she's looking for proof.
The old whiphid Chancellor we see in the seconds before Hosnian Prime blows up was Chancellor Villecham.
I.e.
Neville Chamberlain
Like the Rebel Alliance scenes in ROTS, they needed to insert those deleted scenes in TFA.

The EU and guides barely explain it but it seems they're basically Hydra. They hid out and leached resources from the Republic while conquering territory beyond its border.

From the opening crawl of TFA
With the support of the REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE.
One of the biggest problems is that JJ Abrams, chronic failure, was apparently incapable of worldbuilding (as is usually the case with that lazy, overrated incompetent). So he just made whatever he thought was cool and didn't bother asking whether it was in any way logical or not.
In a way, I almost feel sorry for Rain Whatshisface, because even though he's also incompetent, at least he has a fucking creative bone in his body, and he didn't deserve to be stuck trying to make sense of JJ's lazy, insipid hackwork.

For star Wars:
Direct to dvd fillmaker who gets SW>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Stanley Kubrick.

No. You need someone competent with a strong foundation to build off of. That's why ESB is the best Star Wars movie by far; it was made by a great filmmaker off of a strong foundation. (And it gave Leia more to do and had 30 minutes of Han and Leia bickering in the Millennium Falcon like it was that Chevy Chase vacation movie, which is undeniably the most entertaining part of the movie because it's basically just two very charismatic actors playing two romantic idiots who think they're hardasses)

I see a guy who can make a solid directy to dvd action movie as competent. Certainly more competent than Lucas when he made the Prequels. The bar is low.

The First Order should have been the last remnants of the Imperial Navy that has now retreated the very edge of the galaxy where the New Republic can't reach them. After the battle of Endor, as the Empire was imploding and the Alliance sweeping all before them, there would be an exodus from Imperial worlds. Imperial agents, officials and collaborators who did not want to be captured. So they flee to the outer rim, possibly beyond the rim, and have become the equivalent of a third world dictatorship.
Meanwhile The New Republic has become very isolationist with a ruling party that believes 'it is not our place in impose our will on the rest of the galaxy, nor is it our duty to enforce law and order.' A large part of the people agree with this believing it was their attempt to police the galaxy that gave rise to the Galactic Empire. The Resistance is a collection of individuals who are trying to destroy the First Order before they can become a threat.
This I think would have made a much better setup for a sequel trilogy because it would combine the conflict and adventure of the original trilogy with the intrigue of the prequels. In the middle of it you have Rey and this new generation trying to figure out what it means to be a Jedi Knight in this new era. Are they the guardians of law and order? Or simply the defenders of the republic?

I still think it's an interesting point that Holdo has no reason to trust or take Poe into her confidence but we, the audience, act like she does because he's a protagonist.
Do they suspect a mole in the resistance? Otherwise, not telling your subordinates the plan is not good leadership.
they dont know how theyre being tracked, poe doesnt tell her when finn tells him
OK, but if there was a spy, then the plan of escaping on cloaked ships and hiding in an old base letting the First Order ships to just pass by won't work. A spy could just relay their location when they land.

Eh... Given that the entire Clone Army was secretly constructed in the Outer Rim over the course of just 10 years with no one in the Galactic Senate being any the wiser for it, it's not inconceivable the remnants of the Empire could do something similar over the course of 30 years out in the Unknown Regions.
