So, basically, prisoners are fighting fires for $3 a day, including juvenile offenders, but if they get out their prison record will prevent them from getting jobs as firefighters.
Not sure if the most appropriate reference here is Guinin's speech about disposable people in Measure of a Man or the slave revolt line in Thor Ragnorak.

You did the math wrong. It's $2/day plus $1/hour when fighting an active fire, and there is usually more than 1 hour in a day (unless fighting fires on Venus). They also typically get two days off their sentence for each day served.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 3:30 pm https://www.newsweek.com/california-wil ... rs-1061905

The slave argument is a bit of a problem when they are volunteers and the disposability argument runs into trouble with their getting two weeks' training in fire safety and field conditions.

Alright, I got the math wrong. It's only 1/6th or so of minimum wage by the hour.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 6:49 pmYou did the math wrong. Shhhhh! You're getting in the way of his righteous indignation over another victim group he can be twisted into knots obsessively caring for!Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 6:49 pmYou did the math wrong. It isn't slave labor. They sign up for the job, mostly to get out of their cells. They aren't free men, they are convicts.

Neither nor. They are not required to do that job, they can choose to do so or choose not to do so. They are also getting paid and they get their sentence reduced on top of it. Your indignation about the low wage can easily be countered: The state already pays for their living costs (remember, they have a roof over their heads and they get food and water, electricity) and thus the biggest part of expenses that you have to pay for with your paycheck, is already covered.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 3:30 pm https://www.newsweek.com/california-wil ... rs-1061905

I think this comment from the article itself is a good point.
Curt Rose
I supervised these firefighters for 26 years and have to say your articles is full of holes and misinformation, ie: once release an inmate CAN secure an EMT cert, further more they aren't the only ones out there risking their lives, how about me the supervisor, it is MY SOLE reponsibilty to make sure they DO get back in one piece so they can rejoin their family and better their life. My normal day to day responsibilities are to Train them, counsel them, motivate them, and many more supervisory tasks. They are there simply because they committed crimes, this is all part of paying their debt to society, plain and simple. Articles like this one with the "Liberal" thinking is just ridiculous. Too bad you couldn't have "tagged" along with me when I was working, you would have a better idea and realization of what REALLY goes on and not base your thinking on some liberal study or mindset, sheesh ! I could go on and on but it's not worth my time or breath to waste on the liberal agenda.
