Look up the horseshoe theory. The alt right and the super far left progressives who identify as "very left" tend to resemble one another.

The facts of the underlying ideology can differ, but both agree on things like suppressing any dissent to the One True Way of Governance and Life.

It does seem true that all extremism tends toward the same tools of oppression and corruption.

Please don't try to pull the "Horseshoe Theory" gremplork. That's not how it works.
The horseshoe theory exists to help centrists believe that their apathy and lack of action is enlightenment and restraint.
I don't see anarchists and communists in this country rallying to deport families back to countries where they will be beheaded for their sexual orientation, or murdered by gangs, or made an example of because they want votes.
Deportation of refugees is like throwing somebody back into a burning building.

Both the far left and far right seem to have authoritarian tendencies, including wanting to suppress political speech they don't approve of (e.g., Antifa). To that extent I'll definitely buy into horseshoe theory. The reasons for being authoritarian may differ, but being authoritarian itself matters to me.
Re: Trump camps and baby jails
Dismissing it wholesale is as incorrect as applying it too broadly. It's a valid, but very specific, observation about the nature of extremism and is explicitly not saying "both sides are the same". The criticisms of it, and how it is often misused, are also worth keeping in mind.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Wed Oct 24, 2018 3:54 am Please don't try to pull the "Horseshoe Theory" gremplork. Be wary of making false equivalences, and also of attacking strawmen false equivalences that no one (outside of the extremists) are making.

That's because anarchists and communists have no power in this country. It's easy to be on the side of the angels when you don't actually have any ability to make policy.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Wed Oct 24, 2018 3:54 amI don't see anarchists and communists in this country rallying to deport families back to countries where they will be beheaded for their sexual orientation, or murdered by gangs, or made an example of because they want votes.
But there are plenty of countries where communists DO have power, and their track record is, at best, in line with pretty much everyone else. At worst, well, I'm pretty sure they hold the high score when it comes to purging undesirables.
Anarchists are kind of a edge case. There are certainly areas of anarchy, but I'm not sure anarchists really have power there.
Re: Trump camps and baby jails
If anarchists had power anywhere they would be failures as anarchists, unless it's an extremely short period where they're busy dismantling everything.

Re: Trump camps and baby jails
The way the extreme fringe Sanders voters behaved, they were no different than the worst Trump fanatics. As I've said, ripping banners out of screaming children's hands, wasting money by throwing it at limos, and causing a ruckus by disrupting conventions in a contest they were losing in an attempt to seize power. That's all they know. Violence. They are a minority, but Sanders did nothing to control them past token efforts with subtle winks and nudges and dog-whistles to encourage it to go on.
