Why? It completely destroys a a planets ability to sustain life 'which in a Galaxy doesn't sound all that bad' however habitable planets are hard to come by when you have multiple expanding powers and Terraforming isn't as up to snuff

Yeah the colonists you can move... but what about the unique ecosystems'IE the indigenous plant and wild life' the Entity robs from the universe how many viable cures were just waiting to be found now lost forever cause of a being that has no care but to slick its hunger? Worlds that are cradles for the next major civilization gone because a lovecraftian horror appeared for its mid morning brunch.

Actually, I think you can, given that it's shown to be intelligent enough to work with Lore. Though I suppose Picard might have felt pity, in a "maybe it can't survive any other way, we should help it" kind of sense. He would then think killing it rather than offering an alternative is taking revenge, which he frowns on. It is sadly consistent with Gene's view that humans just shrug off death, and it takes me back to Kirk's line from, what was it? "The Cloud?" On how he was obsessed with revenge. And he admitted maybe he was. McCoy countered revenge won't bring the dead back. Kirk conceded, but then added, "it might mean they rest easy." Another reason to highlight the ways Gene hurt, rather than helped, in the creation of Star Trek.

Picard's attitude is that it is just misunderstood and capable of being communicated with--which is not backed up by either.

The Crystalline Entity could be intelligent, but also unable to perceive that humanoid beings are intelligent. It could be a Little Fuzzy situation, except in this case humans are the Fuzzies.
