Space Advernture universe like the SW EU?
Is there one that only exists in books, maybe some comics and has guidebooks showing what each race looks like, what the galaxy looks like and what do the different factions look like?

You might look up the Lensman series by E.E. "Doc" Smith. It's old, but it's full of larger than life action and has a following. I've only read one of the stories, myself, but there is plenty of information about it out there.
