Won't be celebrating. He was a moderate who didn't vote Trump. That makes him okay in my book. Do I think he did questionable things in his administration, though? Sure. All presidents do.

It's traditional for outgoing presidents to leave a short note for their successor in the oval office, this was his to Clinton.

George H. W. Bush wasn’t the last of the Republican moderates. He was the archetype of the modern GOP, a man whose blue blood shouldn’t be confused with moral courage.

While there are a not-small number of people who despise any president, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush might have been the last two presidents who weren't absolutely despised by half the country. While Carter was seen as a bad president right away, and probably still is overall, some of his humanitarian work has been pretty appreciated. Bush Sr. actually left office with a very high approval rating (his big dip in approval came at the worst possible time), and while he has his critics there just isn't the same level of vitriol aimed at him as every other full-term Republican president since Eisenhower.

He was a mixed bag. Did some good (Gulf war, actually served in WW2 in combat, signing ADA, not being quite as rabidly homophobic as that monster Reagan), some bad (disgustingly dirty campaign especially by the standards of the time, continued failure to properly address the AIDS crisis, some of the stuff he did pre-Presidency was remarkably racist). Overall seems to have been a decent guy trying to be a good leader.

Orders of magnitude better than his scumbag son or the Mussolini wannabe currently occupying the office.

To spell out my feelings more precisely, I miss the pretense of a civil political discourse, don't miss the apathy and neglect that allowed thousands more of my people to die from AIDS, and I'm side-eyeing the heck out of liberal and moderate democrats I know acting like he was a wonderful man standing for a good and decent party.
