Disney's referenced it quite a bit. Clone Wars actually took the first steps back in the day, at the end of the series, when Maul conquers Mandalore, there's a mural behind the Maul/Sidious duel which showed Jedi and Mandalorians at war, along with a few others of more easter-eggy quality which show KOTOR-style mandos at war. There were also some name drops which were in preparation for a Darth Revan cameo, famously kaboshed by Lucas in favor of Darth Bane. In his defense it might have been a "I won't force it on Disney as my final act".

Disney just took the dive, with the whole final arc of S2 of Rebels centering around Malachor, the Taris easter egg in Rogue One, and this season in Rebels have gone into some detail about the Jedi and Mandalorians, and how the mandos "lost the war" with the Jedi.

That does not mean KOTOR is canon.

Indeed. KOTOR and most of the original EU still lies in "Legends."

The new canon universe has been rifling through the EU for material like a classic car collector going through the scrapyard for spare parts to build a new custom ride. As much as I'd love the Mandalorian Wars to be a whole reference to Revan's adventures and solidify their status in Star Wars history, the Mandalorian Wars is a vague enough term that it could refer to an entirely different conflict than the one we know.
Thread ends here. Cut along dotted line.

I'm not sure I'd call Star Wars under Disney "risk adverse". Risk adverse in certain areas, yes (i.e., they play to OT nostalgia a bit too much). But certainly not in all areas.

But going with a black man and a woman as the leads in TFA wasn't exactly playing it safe. Its not the risk it would have been a few decades ago, perhaps, but its certainly not just same old same old.

Nor was making Kylo Ren a deconstruction of a Vader fanboy safe.

Nor was having every major character in Rogue One die playing it safe.

Since they are in Star Wars black people bring jack from their own culture. If the women act to feminine the press will go after Disney so they will be just dudes with boobs.

Based on the lack of motivation for some of the characters in R1 i say the rumors were true and the movie was chopped up and remade after the test audience disliked the first cut.

You might be right about Kylo, but it's overshadowed by the rest of the TFA.

Black people are not one homogenous culture on Earth any more than in Star Wars. But it is still significant to include a black lead (especially opposite a white female lead, and especially if the two ultimately end up as a couple), because their are still plenty of people who get offended by that, for some reason.

Yeah, how dare female characters not conform to arbitrary social definitions of what is "feminine"?

Plus generic whining about the media. Keep delegitimizing that free press!

Possibly. But the end result is the same. They took it in a different direction from the expected.

Eh, I don't get why TFA gets bashed so much, other than the obvious fan whining that would accompany any Star Wars film simply for the crime of not being the OT.

I don't like it because they brought a bunch of old characters back and did nothing with them that actually used the characters. The only one they really used was Han.

And he was mostly making fun of the original trilogy.

Black people have their own music, literature etc... in Star Wars with multiple planets and states? Since when? Who is getting offended in the US? Denzel if one the few remaining bankable movie stars. I don't give a fuck if that some people is 10000 or 100000, it must be a fairly insignificant number. Alright again,. what difference did it make that she is a female or will make? It's not going to be free if it's delegitimized or something? What not free press am i legitimizing at the same time? I wish i was whinning and not stating a fact. The end result is your Asian not white characters acting without motivation. Just watch people turn on it as better and better SW movies will emerge. Just wait...

Not what I was arguing.

My point is simply, as I said, that black people do not represent a single homogenous culture in either world.
Who is getting offended in the US?
That'd be the "Alt. Right" (when any attention is paid to women and minorities). And, in response, activists promoting the interests and rights of those groups.

You know, the primary social disputes of American politics.
Denzel if one the few remaining bankable movie stars.
IA few praiseworthy exceptions do not invalidate an overall trend, which is that their are fewer (even proportionally) major minority stars.
I don't give a fuck if that some people is 10000 or 100000, it must be a fairly insignificant number.
Try "millions".
Alright again,. what difference did it make that she is a female or will make?
In some ways, quite a lot. It'll make a difference to how some people treat you in the real world, certainly (more in some countries than others).

In a Star Wars film... it shouldn't matter, and that's the point. Part of what I like about Rey and Jyn is that they're treated as protagonists just like any other, without making a big deal (in-universe) out of their gender, or heavily sexualizing them. It subtly sends the message that women are equal to men, and can be heroes in this kind of film just as much as men can, without beating the audience over the head with the point.

For some reason, that seems to bother you. Why does it seem that having women and minorities on screen-who don't fill "traditional" roles is seen as offensive or annoying to you? I thought treating everyone the same, without making a big deal out of their race/gender, was what the "anti-political correctness" people always claimed they wanted? Or was that really just a smoke screen for "ignore the issues, and keep them in their place?"

Because (and I apologize if I've misunderstood you) it seems to me that if a film makes an issue out of a character's race or gender, you'll complain about that, and if it doesn't, then you'll say their's no reason to include a character from that race or gender, and one cannot help getting the impression that what you really want is for no female or minority characters or actors to be included unless they fit into narrow "traditional" roles.
It's not going to be free if it's delegitimized or something? What not free press am i legitimizing at the same time? I wish i was whinning and not stating a fact.
I was alluding to the constant attacks (for decades, but escalating under Trump) by the Right on the media, with the aim of either pressuring media into conforming with their views in an attempt to avoid accusations of bias, or delegitimizing, in the mind of the public, any media that does not promote their views. It has created a toxic and increasingly authoritarian culture where the press is now publicly described as the enemy by the government.

Though I admit this is not really the topic of this thread, and apologize for the diversion.
The end result is your Asian not white characters acting without motivation.
I don't quite understand your point here.
Just watch people turn on it as better and better SW movies will emerge. Just wait...
We'll see.

It had its flaws, certainly. But their is a contingent of the fan base that's predisposed to hate anything that isn't the OT (and then whine when they make a film with a plot following that of the OT).
