Scientists discovery how to make coral grow 40 times faster

What do you mean about the buses?
I mean the vast bulk of pollution has bugger-all to do with individual consumer choice, whether we recycle or eat vegan, and is determined by corporate policy, which in turn is in the hands of a precious few political powerhouses and CEOs.

Oh right. The politicians aren't gonna go, "well looks like the reefs are doing okay now so I guess climate's not really an issue anymore :D".

That's already their approach to climate policy. They don't really need facts or evidence to push them.

A policy that can only exist in an environment where there are enough people to go along with it by taking what it offers.

Nuh-uh. We have long since produced more efficient, less destructive means of providing all the fruits of modern technology. The producers of those technologies largely hold monopoly however, and have elected to maximize their immediate, personal profit over all other concerns, including their own survival, superior long-term profit, or the desires of their customer base.

The only 'option' provided is people going off the grid en mass, and *even that* would not produce the outcome of implementing more environmentally viable technologies because the companies would simply crumble without continual income in that event. And y'know, people leaving civilization en mass would also have a sharp increase in death rate. So we can have mass dieouts due to society crumbling or mass dieouts due to environmental disaster under the "personal responsibility" scenario. Great choice pool there.

This argument is essentially arguing that you're personally responsible to consume ethically under capitalism, and that's impossible. So no. Society has to collectively take up that duty, and that means using the instruments of people's will (ie government) to reign in our most powerful and destructive citizens.
