Ironic, given Mary Sue started in Trek fandom as a warning on how NOT to write stories.
Yeah, it speaks volumes to the state of modern Hollywood. This is what I'd rather check out old stories like Babylon 5 and Doctor Who or a nice anime than anything they put out. It's so disgraceful and betrays the spirit of the original works and the pinnacle of their success that I don't even consider them canon. They're just sacrificial lambs at the alter of corporate greed. Plain and simple.

I'm also really annoyed by how stale and lifeless Burnham is now. She isn't even a woman, really, just "the Female Protagonist" cooked up by a 50something white guy whose last contact with a woman was the hooker he paid to let him snort crack off her tits in Vegas when he was blowing off the money he and Robert Orci made from shitting out the script to Into Darkness. She essentially exists to be correct in every decision she makes and opinion she has, an icon of incorruptible purity in a sea of other characters of varying liveliness.
It was bad enough when season 1 took her racist attitude from the first couple episodes, spent the entire season trying to justify it, then did an abrupt 1-80 with no justification following a shallow attempt to convince her to confront her ways in the Mirror Universe. Now? I can't name a single character trait she has other than "does the right thing" and "is well-liked by good characters and disliked by bad ones".
It's an incredible degree of mechanical, formulaic, designed-by-studio-executive-committee character writing, and it pisses me the hell off.
At least "Jet Reno" (what, Dash Rendar, Zoom Houston, and Axe Bodyspray were already taken?) has a bit of life and genuine human warmth to her.

Bwahahahahaha! That description, bro.
This sounds positively Janeway... they wrote her in much the same poor fashion.

I didn't see it like that. I saw it as a subversion of one of Trek tropes that could be called "A Red Shirt Must Die". Well, in that case, it was the Blue Shirt instead.Worffan101 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 1:07 amIt is some of the laziest, tropiest, bullshit, pathetic, modern Hollywood-stereotype "writing" I've ever seen, which means it's actually among the less ludicrously terrible things Kurtzman's signed off on.Enterprising wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 9:33 pmBecause the lesson of the episode is if you don't listen to Burnham, you die. Episode 1 was enjoyable, but...
Why couldn't the guy who came with Pike obey orders ?
Seriously, "anyone who disagrees with The Protagonist must die?" That's fucking Mary Sue fanfic shit!

TNG, DS9 and Voyager subverted that, as it was the greenish-yellow-shirts that died. Blue-shirts were already the primary victims in Enterprise.

It's actually more of a bronzed yellow.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 9:39 amTNG, DS9 and Voyager subverted that, as it was the greenish-yellow-shirts that died. Blue-shirts were already the primary victims in Enterprise.
It mainly has to do with untrained operations officers in lieu of regular command officers.

The redshirt trope has been subverted, parodies, and joked about so much that at this point it's lazy writing to even try to reference it. It was lazy in 2009 to kill the redshirt (which is why they went so over the top with it), it's lazy now to try to make you think they will and then don't.
Has nobody else noticed that this was a scene straight out of Twister? (well, and Into Darkness, but let's not go there) Paxton's character has been shown the entire film to always be right about weather. Almost every conversation people have about him is how much he knows about it, except for the evil storm chasers who think he's washed out (but he used to be amazing, they don't deny that). Sounding familiar yet?
So what happens at the end of the film? The evil storm chaser is near the tornado ready to deploy but Bill sees that the tornado is going to shift. They, being the good guys, try to warn the driver, but the evil guy does not recognize Bill's gift. Then the tornado shifts and they die. That's what they get for not recognizing Bill's smarts.
Same idea: main character is always right and we will kill someone to prove that. At least in Twister nobody sneezes on the poor dead guy for comedy! before offing him.

In Twister Paxton was EXTREME!!!!!!!!!!!! because he threw a bottle at a tornado, not because of the crazy shit he regularly did.Zoinksberg wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 4:46 pm The redshirt trope has been subverted, parodies, and joked about so much that at this point it's lazy writing to even try to reference it.
