Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

That's technically a bit true to form. Most gun nuts like to hide in their bunkers, waiting for the black UN helicopters to attack. Which if she's bordering Lal, could happen.

Oh, she's evil all right. She's a combination of Pat Robertson and the Ayatollah Khomeini with nukes strapped onto her shoes.

Haven't played the game in a long time so I forget most of the mechanics. There was a good mod done for Civ 4 which ported over a lot of the game ideas and most of the lore using Civ 4 mechanics, called Planetfall. Played that fairly recently.

Now that I've watched part 2, and read your replies.

The Planet being alive feels like a Deus Ex machina for the nature worshipers, who don't have a realistic shot at winning otherwise.

Guess who the canonical winner is heavily implied to be... XD

Remember it was the 90s so while the factions are largely exaggerated stereotypes... certain lines of thought are clearly supported over others

I would say for game mechanics it's overall like a speed-up function for feeling the repercussions for pursuing high-intensity industry that causes considerable ecological damage that would normally take a century or two show any serious effects, and even longer to fix. And that's not getting into the more fanficul science fiction aspects of it.

Yeah, the game is pretty clearly biased in favor of goofy hippie ideology. The Planet-based win is basically the easiest to get in the game, to the point that it is actually irritating and I usually disable it when I play. Of course, the ability to even disable victory conditions wasn't in the game until the expansion, which is an incredible irritant.

Its that and Mith's point

since once you can start appeasing the planet... Skye replaces Miriam 'Who is either dead or sitting pretty with an army that can be well equipped... is hard to break morale and gets 25% attack bonus...' as one of the main aggressive factions. ... You traded Baptist Jeanne D'arc for Poison Ivy

I do not know enough about the game's mechanics or the story to comment aside from saying that I thought this was a funny and informative review of the game.

And then there was the lackluster reboot called beyond earth. I kinda wish they protyped the civ 6 engine on it instead of the mainline title. the faction and diplo aspect of it felt weak

Ditto that. Never played this game but I've played the original Civilization a lot. The voting portion of this game reminds me of the "Galactic Council Vote" from Master of Orion (another game I've played a lot.) The vote requires a 2/3rds majority for the player to win, or lose. If the player loses the vote, he can still challenge the ruling but then the game goes into "Final War" mode where the whole new Republic gangs up on the player. The player then has to exterminate every last planet of every other empire to win. It's a real pain.
