Gunnerkrigg Court

Post by Lizuka »

Anyone here read it?

https://www.gunnerkrigg.com/

I think it's probably the best webcomic I've ever read, been following it for a few years now and it is one of the very few I still bother with. It isn't perfect - few story arcs that went on too long or just weren't that interesting (looking at you Quicksilver), it can be pretty slow to actually follow at times, and some things can sometimes be messily handled (I still am not clear on why I'm supposed to care about Paz) - but on the whole I love it. Great cast, great setting, it's fantastic with how it handles its foreshadowing, and it can be anything from touching to hilarious when needed.

Been meaning to give it a re-read for awhile now, although been kind of putting it off due to just how many pages it's up to at this point. When I first started reading it it was at about 800 pages, by now it's over 2100.

I started it pretty early too and yes, it is one of the best webcomics likely ever. Wrote a whole thing on it some time ago (start at the bottom)

So, um, go read it already.

It's pretty good. I too have been reading from a relatively low page count. I have some issues with the world-building as it's recently become relevant how little exposition we've had about the shape of the world the characters inhabit, but otherwise I do enjoy it.

GKC and Unsounded are the only two I still regularly read.

I really like that you made a point of singling out City Face. As minor and oddball as it is it's one of my favorite aspects of the comic.

Only ones I'm really following at the moment are it, Misfile, and Sandra & Woo, and for the latter two I've kind of lost most of my patience for them. Really only keeping up with them because Misfile seems to be ending soon (granted it's had so little actual plot it should have a decade ago) and Sandra & Woo can still be pretty funny when it's not getting bogged down in interminable story arcs.

Might give Unsounded a look because I've been looking for more.

Interesting. I never understood the appeal, and once it became a running gag it's the one thing that I skip over entirely. I just don't "get" it, whatever it's supposed to be.

Cityface is basically the artist having fun, which is what Tom does ALOT. He loves trolling his fans, but it's never mean spirited. Cityface is the purest form of this, so if you approach it from that angle, it makes much more sense.

Admittedly I can completely get why someone wouldn't be able to get into City Face. It's a very offbeat kind of humor that's... in a lot of ways like random humor but feels a lot more calculated than that and kind of runs on its own weird logic. I'd have no clue how to actually explain the appeal of it to someone, just always something I look forward to personally.
