I first heard of Midnight's Edge and Doomcock last week when I saw Doomcock's comment on the STDisco premiere at youtube.
Don't blame Midnight's Edge or Doomcock for the lack of bottoms-up support for STDisco/Michael Burnham. Blame CBS-Viacom-Bad Robot.
If anyone wants to flame youtube fan channels, go ahead----I don't care as I'm not vested in their success or failure. Just saying that their criticisms are reasonable.

HAIL TO YOU ALL! Doomcock is amazed to see how unwisely CBS has allowed all ye who have gathered here the chance to publicly voice your feelings about STD at last. The comments section may not be open long, so I advise everyone to be honest and sincerely voice your opinions, pro or con. I believe CBS may be ready to listen to you now.
CBS, as for MY opinion, Star Trek Discovery is a DISGRACE. It is a perversion of everything Star Trek stood for in the past, and a betrayal of Gene Roddenberry's vision of a bright and optimistic future. This show is not merely bad Trek, it is terrible entertainment, so filled with nonsense and logical lapses it is an insult not merely to viewers, but to human cognition. It is long past time to end this miserable show, get rid of the people making it such a public embarrassment, reunify your company, make Trek whole, disavow this abomination as the work of Q, and start again. There are still fans who care, but you are killing them off as surely as you are killing Star Trek. You are truly running out of time, if indeed any time remains.
Stop this madness. Respect your fans. And restore Star Trek to its former glory.

Re: Sta Trek Discovery season 2 megathread
Nobody was saying that youtubers alone are responsible for what's happening, I just think it's nonsense to assume they don't know what they're doing when they aim their fanbases towards the video (again, vote brigading is a term for a reason, and what youtubers like Doomcock did is a pretty standard way of doing it). I mean, the biggest factor is probably still the fact that most youtube comment sections are garbage in general.
Also, what part of that criticism is "reasonable"? I could replace Star Trek Discovery with the name of any other show and Gene Roddenberry with the appropriate creator, and it would be an equally valid comment. It's just a generic "grr show bad" comment. I mean obviously it's a youtube comment and one shouldn't expect some good analysis from those, and the guy's entitled to his opinion, but I don't see how either of those things negate my assertion that they're not there to actually discuss the show, but rather just there to express as much negativity as possible to make things unpleasant for everyone. I mean, that's practically a stated goal in Doomcock's case given that he wants the show canceled.

This is part reasonable criticism ("this is terrible entertainment, full of nonsense and logical lapses and an insult to the viewers"), and part TOS grognard bullshit ("Restore Star Trek to its former glory").technobabbler wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 3:16 pmOverlord DVD

Like, the middle paragraph is harsh, but the first three sentences are legitimate criticism (personal opinion on the show, pointing out what a pointlessly nasty, unenjoyable slog the show is, and then pointing out how it makes no fucking sense), and he does have a good point that fans are becoming alienated.
I dunno, it's overly harsh and kinda juvenile, even by my low standards, but he has some decent points, even if he does like throwing alt-right slurs around on his videos.

I like how this string of discussion is equal parts reflection of the show and also meta-commentary about social media criticism.

ironically? I enjoy the watching the fan analysis of Star Trek (SFdebris, RLM, etc) more than the source material.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 10:08 pm I like how this string of discussion is equal parts reflection of the show and also meta-commentary about social media criticism.
And learning about the CBS-Viacom Star Trek intellectual property rights split, which I was totally ignorant of until last week. And with that knowledge, analyzing Trek from the real world point of view makes so much more sense.
Maybe someone should sponsor a video on that topic for the Chuck queue.

Re: Sta Trek Discovery season 2 megathread
I saw S2E1, "Brothers," on YouTube. Overall, I thought it was all right. Not great, not terrible. This episode was "the Michael Burnham show" (as some commented) and I think that's a mistake, and I can see why some find Tilly annoying, but I'd watch more episodes if it wasn't behind a paywall, if only to give it a chance.
I won't be paying for access to the show, but I have no reason to want the show to die. Some people like it, after all, and it does me no harm for it to continue to exist.

I thought Pike was great. I don't get why people have a love for Tilly. If it's a kind of hapless ensign Trek trope thing that you got with Crusher or Kim, then that makes sense.
I thought Michael had more character than in the last season.
I felt this was more of an exhibition to prepare you for the season rather than an introduction to the main story.

Re: Sta Trek Discovery season 2 megathread
So, episode three, and I'm still feeling pretty good about this season - it felt less classic-Trek and more Disco than last week, but it seemed like the writers had a better handle on how to make 'Disco style' Trek work in a way it didn't in s1. I'm still a bit wary of the Burnham-heavy story brewing - I've loved her acting from the start, but her writing last year was all over the shop - but I think I'm cautiously on board thus far; her scenes with Amanda didn't put me in mind of what wasn't working last season, so if it holds together I feel like this storyline for her might serve as the 'soft reset' she needed.

I want the show to die, however. If they're gonna tell poor Trek, at least do it as a sequel rather than another prequel. I'd say the same for Star Wars, if only they hadn't retroactively eliminated the sequels we already had that are far superior.
