As the topic says...throw out legitimate ideas that should be explored but won't because it'll be too controversial for TV.
Example: With Bortus from the Orville, Bortus discovers that the child is a girl (versus the species norm of being asexual). Therefore Bortus + spouse ask Dr. Finn to abort the egg, purely because of the sex. Dr. Finn refuses. Drama ensues.
Half of the internet loses its shit because it's a pro-life episode. Half the internet loses its shit because it's pro-choice. Half the internet loses its shit because it's an anti-LBGTQ episode.
Topics that'll never be on TV sci-fi because half of the internet would go nuts....

Climate change.
You can't even bring it up without hearing a Republican clap back that it's really cold in some place and also that it's a natural phenomena that we have no control over. Sadly we all have to pay.

It's not TV, but they did make a whole freaking movie about it. It's called "The Day After Tomorrow." And there's tons of movies showing some kind of apocalyptic future following an ecological collapse. I don't follow enough tv shows to provide examples, but I'd wager someone has tackled climate change somewhere. There was that show "Terra Nova" that I thought was especially focused on environmental stuff (never watched it though.)BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 7:45 pm Climate change.

TV hasn't had anything really about slavery since Roots. And that was 40? years ago. with Geordi LaForge!

Eh, half the internet is in a perpetual state of nuts anyway, and if you sugarcoat issues they'll just pretend it was OTT and flip out regardless. If you're going to be shouted at anyway, might as well just damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead.
My pet idea at the moment is for Flutterina to be trans in the new She-Ra series. I don't know if you'd do the transformation plotline from the original where she gets turned into Flutterina by a magic coccoon, but was a boy to start with, or just have her powers be because she's a Princess and Adora's confused because the Horde taught her the place is ruled by a prince and Glimmer and Bow are like, yeah, that's her - the show's writers would probably have a much better feel for how to frame it, I just think it'd be fun.

Django Unchained (as a movie) was pretty stark on the matter, but Tarantino's just kind of a topic in himself.technobabbler wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 10:58 pmoh ya, forgot about that. too bad.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 10:46 pmThere was that alternative fiction show that the Game of Thrones guys were gonna make involving slavery still being around today.
