If anything, toward the border you tend to find jobs that require you know Spanish so as to serve customers who only speak Spanish.

And I don't think that the more liberal on immigration commenters on here care. They may claim that we can have unlimited immigration and everyone will just assimilate, but in reality we are simply dissolving any sense of common culture and reducing the label "American" to being a political term (i.e., to what government are you a citizen). So from their perspective, there is nothing un-American about linguistic balkanization, because "assimilation" to them means "redefining America" rather than "adapting to America."

In the meantime, previous American history is being rewritten to claim that we never had such a thing as an American culture, and to retcon the past three or four decades to be just like today, so that the demolition of the culture will be passed off as "the way things always were."

The goal, of course, is to destroy anything that might serve to unite us other than our government, so that we will be easier to control.

It's less fascist as it is imperial. keep the various ethnic groups bickering with eachother to make sure those in power stay in power. You never send in Serbian troops to put down a Serbian revolt. You send in Croats or Hungarians.

How did such a system even come about without checks and balances to ensure that a compromise is reached before it reaches this level?
And specifics of this shut down aside, I feel as if this is a system reliant on both sides thinking more of the proletariat than measuring their own dicks which seems like a rather hopeful notion.

My understanding is that this system was designed with the notion that the electorate would work in fear of being voted out if they pulled something so drastically against the interests of their constituency. Unfortunately, we've become a nation of spiteful trolls that will gladly shoot ourselves in the foot if it means the blood will splash on our neighbor.
