And "Ekosian" to "echo". TOS does do some rather on point names.

A managed democracy is a wonderful thing... for the managers... and its greatest strength is a 'free press' when 'free' is defined as 'responsible' and the managers define what is 'irresponsible'.”

I have no idea how this relates to anything I wrote.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Sun Feb 10, 2019 12:45 amYou realize you're defending the use of a conscripted young man to defend the Nazi regime by saying it was just a bunch of people that were victims too, right?clearspira wrote: ↑Sun Feb 10, 2019 12:41 am That's just it though, HE IS NOT A MAN. He is a boy. A boy forced into service. You've got some balls to look at a crying boy and start insinuating that he murdered pregnant women. Real asshole actually.
Reinhard Heydrich was 25 when he became a Nazi.
How old do you think the boys Hitler recruited and conscripted were?
Who gives a shit about A FULLY GROWN MAN named Heydrich?? I am talking about a 16 year old that isn't him.
How old do I think the other boys were? Well ''boy'' means child, as in minor, as in too young to make decisions under the law. Is that a confusing concept? Learn English if it is.

Re: TOS: Patterns of Force
I thought that this was probably Trek's best supporting example for the Prime Directive. John Gill (somehow) has influence over this entire world and, I think with the best of intentions toward it, molds it for the worse.
We don't know what bits he wanted to leave in and what he wanted to leave out. It's hard to imagine a national socialism that isn't authoritarian; a core idea is that all the citizens are harnessed together for the "greater good." We don't know if hatred of the Zeons was to any degree part of his plan; a foe, real or imagined, can draw people together. But we do know that his plan involved exerting control over a lot of people because he thought he could do better. And in some ways it might have worked, although there are other possible explanations for their industrial advancement. But overall it turned out really badly.
Someone with the technological knowledge of a Federation historian (or a starship captain, or a Ferengi negotiator with a replicator) has a lot of potential power over a more technologically primitive society. If he uses that power to shape that society, he's taking a really big risk. Because no matter how well-intentioned, he's just as fallible as anybody else, and that kind of concentration of power can magnify one's nearly inevitable mistakes.
Certainly a better example than Picard's weird statement in "The Masterpiece Society" that their interference "proved just as dangerous to the colony as any core fragment could ever have been." You know, the one where their interference may have meant the end of the culture because of some people leaving, vs. the end of the culture because everybody in it died.

Nazis. You're defending Nazis.
I have every sympathy for conscripts forced into the Nazi cause. They were also serving the Nazis. A lot of children were sent to do horrible things and it was awful.
It's why we should be glad the Nazis are gone.

Could you imagine one day, the Federation gets a message that the Nazi's want to join?

did Gill really get twisted by the power? he got drugged by a psychopath who took control and tricked the rest of the planet to go along with his psychopathy.
