I can't really tell you what the first two movies are about, at least from a 'moral of the story' standpoint (the moral of Star Trek 2009 seems to be, "Kirk is a dick"). Unfortunately, this is why Beyond in my perception is the outlier, and is why I say that JJverse Trek is morally hollow.

I disagree, he was just as much of a dick in Into Darkness. If he was less of a dick, even if for some stupid ass reason he still falsified a report, he wouldn't have been so pissy about the Vulcan not lying for him.

The fuck are you even on about with this semantic bullshit? Acting like a dick is what makes you a dick. When someone acts like a dick you can say their acting like a dick, or you can call them a dick. It means the same thing.

Basically, all of this? Yes, Kirk was a dick.
Though, in hindsight, I guess there is an actual moral in that, too: "Just because you have one, doesn't mean you need to be one." It just requires a lot more thinking and philosophizing to come to that moral, though - the original one ("Kirk is a dick.") is directly supported by the material in the movie(s).
