I much prefer Chuck's take on the episode. Much more balanced. Riker was a bit of a baby at times but also had some points. Not nearly as bad as this video and another I've seen make him out to be there.

Of course Riker was a twat in season 1. But then so was Picard.

Then that's a tyrant. Too much power to one person, and even in a time of war, the chain of command and rule of law and hierarchy needs to be respected. The worst, most brutal, destructive, pain-filled wars were those when that was tossed to the side.

Well, it's not what I would have done, for sure.

I think this overlooks the imminent threat that was the Cardassians. This wasn't an act to sustain power or suppress.

Also Jean Luc was cognizant of his role I think.

Yeah I'm not totally siding against one or the other. I can see where Jellyco oversteps things though. He undermined Riker's operation.

I think Riker was out of line. Jellico was doing questionable things, but IIRC nothing that would break laws or regulations. It's natural for Riker to feel loyalty to his friends and former CO, and his objections were human, but not professional. Jellico micro-manages far too much, given the situation, but he's the captain.

I guess my judgements come more from a position of character than any one action. Jellico is just a meathead.

Well to be specific the episode injects the fact that Jellico isn't doing what he does out of thick headedness, but more of anxieties brought about by the Cardassians.

So he's a panicky meathead then.

And the Jallico episode?
Riker was a butthead because the writers couldn't decide on a consistent tone for Riker.

Respect the chain of command. Unless you have a very good reason not too, the insubordination that Riker mentioned in the "Encounter at Farpoint."

Riker had no reason to disobey Jellico's orders or second guess Jellico's style.
