Re: Hundreds of Australian children to be starved for science
My Socialist friend says the left does have a bad habit of virtue-signaling... way too true.

Virtue signalling doesn't have much to do with what's going on here.

Ultimately it won't work. Obesity is in the mind; the waistline is only the secondary effect. If these kids still like the taste of burgers or have underlying causes for comfort eating or feel like straight up rebelling against the adults then they will be fat again in no time.

Yeah but the intent of the study is to determine the effect of dying with consideration to what you're talking about. Dieting from what I can tell has more and more been considered a misguidance towards well being, and that's what Madner seems to be suggesting this study is conscious of and maybe trying to address.clearspira wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 8:56 am Ultimately it won't work. The initial low calorie portion of the test is for one month, which doesn't seem that bad. After that, the kids are given from 1434 to 1934 calories per day in the low calorie group (1434-1694 for the younger group, and 1694-1934 for the older group). The fasting group gets a reduced amount of calories lower than the 800 calorie mark of the first month, but it's only for 3 days out of the week and it's non-consecutive.

@BridgeConsoleMasher Virtue-signaling and appeal to morality is sometimes the left's modus operandi. Which isn't always bad, but it sometimes blinds them, as I'm slowly learning. For me, though, if the kids volunteered, then I have no problem. If not, then I do have a problem, because no one should be forced to do something they don't want to do. I believe everyone should be allowed to get what they want - within reason. If you want a million dollars, cool. But if you steal it, then, well... I can't feel sympathetic unless, say, you REALLY pumped like 60% or 70% of it to others, and stole it from some uber-rich person.

LittleRaven, cut the Green Eggs and Ham fallacy. It doesn't matter where they are being starved, they are still being denied the amount of nourishment necessary for them to function. Parent enrollment doesn't mean much to me. Ever see Toddlers and Tiaras?
I don't think we need a kids bop version of the Minnesota Starvation Experiment.

I utterly agree with your conclusions and utterly disagree with your premise.clearspira wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 8:56 am Ultimately it won't work. Obesity is in the mind. The only secret to staying thin is heathy eating and exercise which if you are able bodied is a choice. Sitting down and playing videogames all day whilst stuffing your face is a choice. Which is why I do not agree with these people who claim that it is a disease - the only disease here is choosing your PS4 over going for a jog.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Feb 28, 2019 1:48 amI utterly agree with your conclusions and utterly disagree with your premise.clearspira wrote: ↑Wed Feb 27, 2019 8:56 am Ultimately it won't work. You think that every starts out skinny and only becomes fat by making persistently bad choices. You believe that your thinness is a form of virtue and fatness is visible manifestation of sin.clearspira wrote: ↑Thu Feb 28, 2019 9:12 pmObesity is in the mind. I believe these kids will end up fat again because going into starvation mode slows down your metabolism in the long run and because there is no substantial scientific evidence that long term weight loss is humanly possible in the majority of the population.
