I really like Pike.
Even Mirror Philippa?
She's kinda hammy in my opinion. I think part of it has to do with Michelle Yeoh in general. I liked her in Tomorrow Never Dies, but I'm just not getting either of her characters here. Being a mirror universe counterpart I want to see her become effective as a federation tactician or systemically manipulative within S31. I don't care to see her smug as it serves no contrast to anything we really know about her. We saw in the first episode that she had an old wise chat with Michael, but I don't think there's much distinctive about her as a captain.
Yay, S 31 are such idiots that the outsider from the Sith universe can fuck them over after they accepted him easily. It makes them look like idiots.
I'll allow it.

Well idunno what she expects to get out of this. Surely not going to amount to being an emperor.

All I can see is her getting down to business as usual. I don't get why she teases Michael about killing Spock outside of scorn since Michael's responsible for her getting the position ultimately or w/ever.

I really don't know where they're going with this, but if it turns into a disastrous trainwreck for all involved, and they do it well, then yeah sounds fun.

See, this is why STD sucks. Butchering the Mirror Universe and Section 31. Section 31 only revealed themselves to Bashir, during wartime, when they wouldn't care about people knowing about them and doing so much help the Federation's reputation - and so he'd be an "open" agent for them, which is kind of odd, but it worked in that episode near the end of DS9. Other than that, an agency that's existed at the heart of the Federation since its foundation would do a hell of a lot better job hiding itself. How can you not see these glaring continuity errors and think this is somehow true to the previous lore? IT'S NOT.

Talosians. Sure, why not.

I guess technically they never say why going to Talos IV carried the death penalty. Perhaps it wasn't the events of The Cage and instead Discovery screws things up so bad that the Federation will straight up kill the next person that goes there. Seems fitting.

Hey, would you want STD to be part of the canon? I wouldn't. So anyone who attempts to do so must be hunted down and shot.

I always figured the death penalty was just part of the illusion.

That was an OK episode, a good one even, of a different show.

Oh, wait, that was supposed to be Star Trek, and that hipster reject whose daddy doesn't love him enough so he's sad and joined a cult is supposed to be Spock?

Yeah, fuck that noise. Peck's performance as Spock makes Quinto's rote but competent interpretation of Nimoy's classic approach look positively transcendent by comparison. The writing sucked as usual but at least it wasn't as terrible as it's been and Martin-Green stepped up to the plate a bit.

Jesus, though, so LITTLE happens in these episodes in between the pricey CGI scenes, I don't know why anybody bothers to watch!

Talos IV... Suddenly, Christopher Pike's presence on the show becomes more relevent.

What did that fortune cookie say in episode 1? "Not every cage is a prison, not every loss eternal." And now we have a red angel traveling through time and the track leads us to Talos IV. Maybe we will get to learn the consequences of Pike returning to Talos IV in The Menagerie. The Talosians wanted Pike and Vina to create a new race in The Cage. Even if he was damaged, they got what they wanted. Maybe the red angel has something to do with that. Maybe he wants to prevent Pike's injury for some reason? Or his return to Talos IV?
