This shift in politics and preachiness predates making the doctor a woman.Yukaphile wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 6:14 pm @Admiral X Again, I repeat, they wanted to make the Doctor a woman since the 1980s, but only in today's climate could they do that. If anything, it shows how far we've come. So making the Doctor female is not inherently political. It's only political if you call attention to it.

I only live in the US, I don’t know the intricacies of other cultures in different countries like I do on my home nation. However, I recall revisiting the DRAGON BALL anime years back and being pretty put off by how it depicted African characters with the stereotypical big red lips and jet black skin from minstrel shows. That’s just a show from 30 years ago, so I don’t know if that’s something that persists in their culture today, assuming it was ever a thing. I understand African leading films aren’t too popular in China, as the Chinese poster for THE FORCE AWAKENS indicated by minimizing Finn’s presence in the poster.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 6:51 pmMakeshift Python wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 6:09 am "Punching up" always varies depending on cultural context. Making n-word jokes in Nigeria is not really the same thing as making jokes about white Christian fundamentalists in the US. It's not even strictly about economic and academic success, otherwise we wouldn't have redneck jokes.
So where in the world is it OK to discriminate against anybody who isn't white for their race? What are the rules here?

I think Black Panther did well in China, but I do hear black characters are de-emphasized in the marketing of filsm in CHina.Makeshift Python wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2019 3:47 amI only live in the US, I don’t know the intricacies of other cultures in different countries like I do on my home nation. But what I meant was, where in the world would it be "punching up" to discriminate against a non-white people for their race?

I already answered:
I can’t give a comparable example of what would constitute as “punching up”, whether it’s about race, status, class, etc. Other things need to factor in such as free speech. “Punching up” would certainly not be a thing at all in North Korea unless conducted in private. We can easily mock Trump for his silver spoon upbringing, but you can’t really do the same on Korea’s leader unless outside his domain.I only live in the US, I don’t know the intricacies of other cultures in different countries like I do on my home nation.

So the only race you know of whom it's OK to discriminate against are white people. Even if Asians do better than white people, on average, in a predominantly white country. Got it.Makeshift Python wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2019 6:35 am I already answered:

The movie is out by the way guys.
The answer?
"Eh, it's okay."

Solid Marvel movie, not their best not their worst. The storyline went in some interesting directions, the characters were likeable and their motivations (For the most part) relatable or at least understandable.
Apparently it made about 25 Million in the states on Thursday so it's in the company of 'Black Panther' and 'Captain America Civil War' so it's in fine company domestically. It also made another 80 Million World wide so far...so it's not looking like a failure at this point.

Anyone here remotely suggesting that it was going to steal anyone's manhood or end humanity? Or did you too forget to add your winky face?CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2019 7:24 pm The movie is out by the way guys.

Re: Captain Marvel: The MCU's First Failure?
Well, having got back from Captain Marvel...it was a genuinely good film in my opinion. It seems like it's got a good opening box office. The audience reviews on stuff like RottenTomatoes has been quite low, but considering this movie's got more RT reviews in a day than Infinity War has since its release, so I think that it's safe to assume that something might be up there.
I think Brie Larson might be some of the best casting Marvel's ever done - and that's saying a lot.
The deaging CGI they did on Samuel L. Jackson was also great, and his performance was excellent. If they want to do a 'Nick Fury, agent of SHIELD' flashback movie (possibly some kind of buddy piece with Couslon), I'm there.
Goose was a genuine treasure.
I'd say more, but I can't figure out spoiler tags.

There are two types of failure: commercial and critical. Captain Marvel has a critic score of 81% and an audience score on RT of 36%. You brought up Black Panther and Civil War so lets do a comparison: Black Panther - 97% critic score, 79% audience score. Civil War - 91% critic score, 89% audience score. In this regard, it is a failure.Ordo wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2019 7:58 pm Solid Marvel movie, not their best not their worst. Me personally I always put more store in the audience score anyway and that goes for any film or TV show - this has only been solidified in me with the dissonance surrounding STD and Orville. I simply do not trust any reviewer than draws a wage. Although lets be honest, 81% is hardly breathtaking for the number 1 feminist movie of the year either.
