Would I be right in saying that this sums up your view of the 2016 election?Steve wrote: ↑Tue Mar 05, 2019 3:22 pmWell, Fuzzy's been accused of compiling a potential block list, but he may just be curious about disparate views.
Personally? I think he's a narcissistic demagogue unfit to be mayor of a small town, much less President of the United States, and that he got into power the same way any demagogue does: appealing to the worst instincts in the electorate. Moreover, I frankly wonder if he ever intended to be President, but rather entered intending to just rile shit up in the Republican primary before losing, just to have his message give him enough early victories that he got unbeatable momentum and the rest of the GOP fell into line to back "our candidate" as they seem to usually do. Then he got to run against a Democratic candidate facing over twenty years of negative attacks on her reputation (some possibly deserved), with her base divided by Bernie S, while believing her Presidency her personal right and a foregone conclusion. A candidate whom I'd describe as having the charisma of a dead fish, but that would be unkind... to dead fish.
And yet I still voted for her, nose plugged, because whatever her negatives, I feel she at least understood the dignity of the office she was seeking, and better her than the narcissistic demagogue. Unfortunately, while I was in the majority of Americans, it was not a majority in the right states (including my own).

It is pretty wishy-washy but I at least appreciate you sharing your thought process with me.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Tue Mar 05, 2019 5:32 pm Trump is the first GOP POTUS candidate in a long time I didn't vote for. I'm glad that he won instead of Clinton, but that's really not a very high bar. I think he's obnoxious and petty.
I'll support him on some issues (e.g., making fighting illegal immigration a priority), and oppose him on others (e.g., global warming). My loyalty is to the country, not the person, no matter who's in that office.
This might be the least helpful, most wishy-washy answer you'll get on this thread - sorry.

As stated, I want to know who genuinely supports/approves of him vs who is just playing devil's advocate or opposed to certain left-wing policies or what. A better understanding of why people are pushing an idea will at least give me a better opportunity to engage with the actual issues instead of what I perceive the issues to be.

I'll be honest I didn't like 45 since he made fun of that disabled journalist (though that might be bias since I have a disability myself)but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when he won after this long, I can honestly say I don't like him or the way he is running the country.

The worst President in the history of the nation, except possibly for James Buchanan. A corrupt, incompetent grifter who gleefully engages in insanely racist rhetoric, naked nepotism, and blatant corruption. His Department of Veterans' Affairs is subservient to a treasonous billionaire with Russian connections, his campaign manager was a Kremlin agent, and his Department of Education is beholden to Betsy DeVos's corrupt for-profit-college business interests. His national security advisor is an insane warmonger with a WW1 mindset who openly doesn't care about the lives of our soldiers. His Secretaries of State have been universally corrupt and incompetent, his vice-President is an evil religious fanatic, and his most recent SCOTUS appointment is a corrupt, totalitarian rapist who supports an imperial Presidency.
Literally the fucking worst, except possibly for Buchanan.

That's honestly a pretty good summary. Clinton would at least have been competent but she's just as beholden to corporate interests.Steve wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2019 5:20 amI usually employ the AvP tagline to describe the 2016 election. I didn't vote for him, won't vote for him in 2020, I didn't vote for Clinton either and I probably won't vote for the democrat in 2020. That's not to say I'm a total centrist, If there had been a gun to my head and I had to vote for him or Clinton in 2016 I would have voted for Trump while gritting my teeth so hard my dental bill would quadruple. I think Trump is not superb domestically and is pushing people towards extremes in both parties. I think He is far from the worst President though. Buchanan and Wilson as well as Harding I personally think were far worse. Then again I like to wait a decade before making deciding whether a president is "good" or not.

Yeah, the media successfully pushed the "deranged mad power-seeking woman tyrant" image with her in the largest-scale character assassination in history to the point even people who voted for her like Fuzzy didn't even like her. Someday, we should remember their blatant lies and slanders with the shame it deserves as a society and a people.
