Re: Sta Trek Discovery season 2 megathread
When I think of the bridge on TOS I think of most any sci-fi leading up to that point. I don't think it was really a thing about budget per se, just innovation in design. The squeaky noise you hear constantly on the bridge, it's what more early 1900's sci-fi imagined. That goes for the uniform design as well. Maybe that was a matter of showcasing color on people's tubes where it had before been black and white, but the concept of sci-fi was largely divorced from real standards.

I actually would have liked the design elements of TOS retained but souped up to 2019 standards. More graphical displays as opposed to static images of space. By large, a lot of the bridge in TOS was a compromise as it actually appeared more advanced in “The Cage” with more use of animated monitors, which couldn’t be retained because of budget.

I'm really tempted to post examples, but I don't want to risk embarrassing any of artists by putting them on the spot by some rando arguing on the internet. Really the upshot is that there are artists have already proven this argument is bullshit. All that has to be done is to add a higher level of detail while keeping the basic aesthetic the same.

Pretty much. Given the captain’s chair showing up in the title credits, I suspect the bridge will look more faithful to TOS aesthetics than DISCO but like the outside of the ship more souped up. So far all we saw was Spock’s quarters, which was just a redress of a DISCO set with the primary TOS colors painted over.Admiral X wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 7:35 am I'm really tempted to post examples, but I don't want to risk embarrassing any of artists by putting them on the spot by some rando arguing on the internet. Astoundingly stupid but at least Doug Jones got to act his heart out.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 4:27 amWhat'd you think of Saru's home planet episode?

Re: Sta Trek Discovery season 2 megathread
The best example of updating aesthetics I have ever seen in Red Dwarf. Instead of just making the ship look different without explanation; they made it a whole plot point at the end of season 7 by demolishing the ship and then rebuilding it under the pretext that the original ship was a three million year old rustbucket built on a budget and now here's this brand new ship built with the best that the JMC had to offer. It is absolutely inspired. And what's more is that it does fit into the universe. The new Starbug for example has touchscreen and analogue controls.
And I am going to give rare praise to Disney Star Wars. A lot of effort has been expended to make Ep 7 and 8 look at if it fits into the same universe, and that includes using wire frame graphics on their monitors.
These two properties prove that you can take something old and modernise it without breaking canon. It just requires intelligence, creativity, and giving a shit.

That was one shitty episode.
Even more "PLEASE CARE ABOUT THIS REDSHIRT!!! PLEEEEEASE!" than the most desperate Voyager episode.

It would've been a lot better had they spent some more time with the character in previous episodes, at least in season 2. Instead she got maybe 2 or 3 lines per episode, if that.
Taking this episode on its own it handled it pretty well I thought, kind of a waste of a cool character concept though. Cybernetically-augmented human who can upload/download memories seems like she could slot easily into a Data/The Doctor sorta role about questioning identity and personhood.
