I'm willing to defend your right to free speech up until but not including a call for violence or coercion that violates others' rights.

Did they? I sure don't remember anything about that. I remember them looking very silly, but that's about it. The only violence I remember was initiated by antifa some days later and culminated in one of the righties driving his car through a crowd of them. And all over some statues...

Thank you! But from what I've read, that was part of a general fracas involving both sides, and not something I've heard described as a form of defensible speech. Did I miss something?Draco Dracul wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 3:59 pmIt's a reference to the Unite the Right rally where the day prior to the rally the Unite the right protesters beat counterprotesters with tiki torches.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 3:48 pmNo answer about the tiki torches? @Antiboyscout So someone literally calling up someone for politically motivated reasons and threatening to rape or kill them or someone close to them, to influence what they say and do, that's not hate speech? Because that's happened in the past, buddy.

No, that'd fall under being a criminal threat, you know, an actual crime.

Re: Egg Boy
I think the fact getting tossed aside in this debate is that Fraser Anning was egged by a constituent angry at Anning's comments blaming Muslims for being shot by the Christchurch terrorist.
Anning said what he wanted, has the right to free speech, and is not being punished for exercising that right by the government (excepting the specific condemnation by the legislature, which is not restriction on speech but retaliatory speech saying that Fraser Anning is a douchelord). That said, the rest of Australia has expressed their opinion of his speech, up to and including by egging him, and the police are no doubt aware that the likelihood of any Aussie jury actually convicting this kid of anything is basically nil, so they're charging Anning with assault for escalating the situation and hoping that that raging douchewaffle who calls himself a Senator learns how to not be a terrible person from this experience.

It's hilarious the people think it's only censorship if the government did it.
Also, if someone say, punched you, for saying something they didn't like, are you just going to say that was a consequence of exercising your right to free speech and expect the person who did it to not face any consequences for it?

Well, yeah. Private citizens have the right to tell others that their speech was disgusting and hateful. That you think otherwise is indicative of you being an 8chan troll who wandered off the dark web.Admiral X wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 7:01 pm It's hilarious the people think it's only censorship if the government did it.

If I blamed the victims of a mass murder for the murderer's fascist manifesto and insane racist justification for his actions, I would deserve to have my balls cut off and force-fed to me. I would expect to find the law of any just society come down more harshly on me than on anybody who started a fight with me in that case. Also, if I were a legislator, I believe that I should were that the case be held to a higher standard than the average civilian, and that escalating a situation as Anning did is unbecoming of a lawmaker and merits condemnation if not actual punishment.
Re: Egg Boy
No, I think punching someone for something they said is wrong because I'm a civilized human being who thinks such an act is a crime and should be punished as such. Ironic considering I'm the gun nut, huh?Worffan101 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 7:04 pm Well, yeah. Private citizens have the right to tell others that their speech was disgusting and hateful. Also, you're assuming this hypothetical is with some weird mirror-universe version of you saying something the real you doesn't agree with. No, my hypothetical is for the real you saying something you heartily agree with, and someone who disagrees with that just punched you in the face for it.

If someone EGGS me for saying something stupid as an elected official, I'd take it and laugh, then call them a douchebag. If someone PUNCHES me, I'll call the cops and let them sort it out.Admiral X wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 7:08 pmNo, I think punching someone for something they said is wrong because I'm a civilized human being who thinks such an act is a crime and should be punished as such. What I wouldn't do is escalate the situation by responding to someone cracking an egg over my head with a punch.
