There is no reason by the 23rd century men would not be wearing skirts in all seriousness. We've gone from homosexuality being illegal to widespread gay marriage in a 100 years. We've gone from black segregation to a black president in 50. To suggest that men will start wearing skirts in 200 is not unlikely and I for one have no problem with it.

That's not my objection; by the 23rd century everyone could walk around in shorts and top hats. But I think it will look silly on television. "Silly" is really subjective, of course.

Trek trivia: they had a similar discussion when planning TOS, thinking fashions would change and wanting to show that with a hairstyle change or something, but in deference to the actors (who had to live with that hair) they ended up with those pointy sideburns.

As a man who as a boy sometimes snuck out to put on my mom's bathing suit (yes, I did that), I will say I never felt tempted to wear a skirt. Ever.

I tend to disagree. Pants are better for certain tasks, no question, but otherwise skirts are perfectly serviceable. I suggest wearing (a long) one at some point, especially in summer. I do that regularly, except when being at work or when venturing out into the wilds with my drone and my bike.

We've discussed the logical problems with Harry Potter before and here's a good example - the Hogwarts school uniform has trousers for boys and skirts for girls. Did Archie not go to Hogwarts or what? Of course, this is potentially a film problem as one part of the books has James use the charm on Snape that floats you upside down by the ankle and his robes fall to reveal a pair of greying underpants. Which implies that the book version of the uniform has you wearing nothing but a robe... or this is just a Snape thing? Going half nude to school?
Either way, it really changes my mental image of the books. Either Snape is a pervert along with all of his other crimes, or Harry and Hermione are almost nude in every scene they are in for the first six books.
