If they somehow improve the testing results and thus apparently improve the ability to learn, are they really needless? Whether they work by correcting unknown issues (thanks to a lack of comprehensive public healthcare) or because glasses have an innate intelligence modifier of +2, doesn't really matter, does it? At best the later allows for cheap window glass mock-ups.

What are you refering to? He's right when he asks for more investigation, because it could be a completely unrelated factor, like additional attention the kids in question get. My objection is to the word "needless", not his basic premise.

There was a pun involved. Apparently a rather weak one... But if the truth came out (and it might with such a big project) then it might ruin the effect.

Though not necessarily; sometimes a placebo works even when the subject knows it's a placebo. People brain weird.

I vaguely remember a study which found that the Placebo-effect isn't actually tied to recieving "medicines" or therapies in the traditional manner. What actually heals these people, is simply the attention they get, the feeling that they get cared for, even if it is by something as simple as a pill once a day. People brain wierd indeed.

Source lacking, as I never bookmarked it.

Also, now that you point it out, I got your pun. Originally, I was only wondering about your last sentence being so completely out of place. I get it now and you deserve a *chuckles*

Too bad they aren't running this study in Tennessee, I haven't had new glasses in 4+ years and with no insurance, they'd be about $200.

That's thanks to one company establishing a virtual monopoly on glasses supplies, so that no matter which retail outlet you turn to you have little choice. These days eyeglasses are cheaper to make than ever, about $1.50 per pair.

Luxotica (Adam Ruins Everything did a segment) and yeah. I could understand $25-$50, you're only going to get a pair every year or so, minimum and they have to eat, but like with so many medical expenses, the markups are so insane it's a wonder people aren't just dropping like flies from untreated illness.

I just bought new glasses and examination with insurance for $127.00 at America's Best.

But I do need hi-index lenses which are only covered for $40, and I did splurge a little.

I have bought glasses on Zenni for $44 previously, but I did need an exam and will appreciate the fitting service.
