That doesn't look very scary. More like a six foot turkey.

But in all seriousness... I just thought this would be a chance to geek out over space stuff. Hell, when I was a kid, I had a book about the solar system. This kind of stuff fascinates me. Six million light-years! Just... WOW.

Just looking at the immense size of galaxies makes me so wish for ftl travel, I know it's probably not within the cards, but I can't help but want to see what's out there.

I read about something called the Orion Project with fusion-pulse engines that could propel a spacecraft at 10% the speed of light. That actually means we could colonize nearby space fairly quickly. We could at least travel to Alpha Centauri within 40 years.

yeah, but I would seriously like some good life extension technology before I commit that much.

Well, seeing the things out there is pretty much the only thing we can do right now, so Hooray for you?

Ah, I meant like land on different worlds or see a different type of star in space. Don't get me wrong, I love the pictures and info we have, I don't know it's a complicated longing for the unknown that's probably naive, but it's mine dammit!

In some ways, I feel happy we're not traveling to other worlds. In some ways. On the one hand, finding out what's truly out there might help us better ourselves as a race and understand our place in the cosmos better, unlock the secrets of life and creation. On the other hand, you just know we're going to bring our problems into outer space. Why do so many sci-fi shows have planets "declaring" independence? Simple. They replace our tribal and primitive nation-states, and then there's stuff like fighting over land and resources. Interstellar wars. I really want us to resolve these major social problems before we move out across the galaxy.

Honestly, provided there is a lot free planets, I think it could help our society move past it. I mean if we can make a ton of stable O'Neill Cylinder type space station we could move people above the poverty line faster because there would just be more land and space. I'm kind of an optimist when it comes to the future and think we will reach, if not "post scarcity", we will reach a lot less scarcity if I make sense.
