I remember this episode reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey both leave you with that sense of 'what in the world did i just watch?'

Yeah, this is an episode that blows your mind, over and over again. I can see how it puts a lot of people off as just when you start to get a handle on it it just throws another curve ball at you. I was excited to hear Chuck's thoughts on it just to try and figure it out.

I seriously need to start watching this show, as the show seems to present very heavy philosophical concepts for me to chew on.

This really brings to mind Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. But really it brings to mind any discussion or outrage over story telling mediums be they movies, games (the creation of the ESRB, Jack Thompson, and recent drama), books, or comics (the Seduction of the Innocent book that led to the outrage over EC horror comics and the strict rules of the Comics Code Authority that lasted into the early 70's)

And that whole 'critics don't make mistakes' bit just makes me think of The Last Jedi's reception and how people have told me and many others that I'm wrong for not liking it. And man, that lady's whole diatribe about critics towards the end... well it's not wrong when applied to certain critics but certainly not you Chuck!

Anyone else get a whole St. Elsewhere twist vibe from that implication that Kino's just in a fake reality made up of stories?

And wow, this kind of story reminds me of the meta ideas I have when I'm not doing anything or when I let my mind wander.

Adored that summation of stories and dreams Chuck said at the end.

The dreamlike Meta journey and the post-post-apocalyptic feel of Kino's Journey does make this tempting. Unfortunately post Matrix any and all o but reality might be a fantasy just can't help but come off not deep but incredibly cheap. After all it removes the obligation for consistency or resolution

Chuck reviewed (negatively) the cult classic horror musical Repo! The Genetic Opera some years ago.

That film, despite flopping at the box office and having mostly negative reviews from professionals, has gained a dedicated, very passionate following in the 11 years since its release. Chuck has probably caught some flack for it from the fanbase.

I haven't seen it, but I have listened to one or two tracks on YouTube and I like the music.

That film, despite flopping at the box office and having mostly negative reviews from professionals, has gained a dedicated, very passionate following in the 11 years since its release. Chuck has probably caught some flack for it from the fanbase.

I haven't seen it, but I have listened to one or two tracks on YouTube and I like the music.

Additionally Chuck has a preference (or guideline, or even as firm a s a rule now) of no or limited gore in what he'll review. He does not like the squick factor and would rather not review such movies. Repo! slipped in, and while he reviewed it he didn't much care to do it (is my understanding).

As a person that was fallowing him when he did the review and was and still is part of that passionate fanbase, I don't remember any particularly egregious examples of flack being directed towards him. That's why I asked. I mean, he's a guy expressing his opinion on the internet, people disagreeing with him is to be expected, but I really don't recall that review being received any worse then any other review he might have done.

This reminds me of the episode "In Between Dreams and Reality" of Sorcerer Hunters which involves a book that will make all your dream come true...but will trap you with in to do this. The episode ends with a book fluttering close making you wonder if they have actually escaped or this (and everything that follows) happens only in the book and they are still trapped.
