Except it isn't a kids movie. Have you watched the trailer? Half the jokes in there are 80s references...

Now, I don't have anything against a movie for kids, but this one is grossly miscast, targets an audience that doesn't exist (people who understand Terminator-references, but have watched the Dora cartoon series? really?) and ignores the audience it could get. It's a movie made by adults who think that making a movie with a cartoon character and some light jokes makes it a movie for kids, but end up creating a movie for adults with jokes that can only be understood by an older audience but with kids themes. And making Dora a high-schooler with a visibly too old actor for the part is a typical mistake made by these types of movies and fairly examplary for everything wrong with this movie.

Could be a tax write-off for Nickelodeon. I don't get how you can make such a movie and not see the flaws instantly. If you want to make a kids-movie, make a kids movie. If you also want to take in the parents going into the movie along with their kids, then have a look at The Goonies.

This wouldn't be the first time a kid's TV show or movie made references to stuff kids wouldn't understand. Actually I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a cartoon that doesn't do that at at least one point.

Wasn't Dora the Explorer meant for really little kids to learn a little Spanish? I don't think stretching that out for an hour and half is a good idea. Like, if it's up against any movie that a kid can go to, most parents would pick that movie because it'll be boring.

I looked her up and she's only 17. She is actually a teenager. I guess it depends what grade they were going for.

Casting adults to play teens or teens to play kids in a kid's movie is nothing new, either.

From what I can tell, the movie starts with Dora going to school, then they go to the jungle for wacky fun-time adventures™. There's probably enough material there to take up 90 minutes (or more precisely, there's enough variety in locale for them to waste 90 minutes).

To be clear, I have zero interest in this movie, I'm just not really seeing how this is any more of a trainwreck than most cash-in kids movies. I think the kids will enjoy it just fine.

It seems some people forget that kids don't go to these movies by themselves. The adults have to accompany them, and the references that kids will likely not understand were actually for the adults so that they could have something to at least enjoy as much as the kids. That's why they call these family movies instead of kiddie films.

So yeah, I'm not really seeing the fuss. And the parody video seemed to aim more at the idea of turning something that was aimed at kids into a dark and gritty film, which was all the rage because of Nolan Batman. There's a Power Rangers dark and gritty parody with Katee Sackhoff that's pretty on point about the trend.
