Smollett's own lawyer said the brothers did it. You have to squint really hard to see them as guilty and Smollett himself as this innocent martyr, but whatever. That part of it isn't that complicated.

And yeah, when asked Magats also said that he did believe that Smollett was guilty. Now, why he thinks that 18 hours of community service (seriously, that's what he did over a weekend) is a proper price to pay in exchange for dropping 16 felony indictments is anyone's guess. There's certainly more to that part of the story.

There was a study where this was shown. Conservatives could predict the reactions of liberals far better than liberals could predict the reactions of conservatives.

I'm going to reserve judgement. It seems to me that the prosecutors dropped a really good case, which doesn't make sense (a prosecutor would have to be dirty and incredibly dense to think he could get away with it with this much publicity), or that Smollett was attacked by two black men, one gay, for being black and gay, or wanted him to think he was being attacked for being black and gay.

They might have attacked him to help him out, without telling him that's why they were doing it. But that sound more like some horrible crossover between I Love Lucy and The A-Team than something that would happen in real life.

There may be a civil lawsuit, so some of this could come out.

The prosecutor is associated with the Obamas, and apparently had tried to pawn this case off on the Feds, so I can't help but wonder if this is a case of a true believer simply refusing to prosecute for ideological reasons.

Tchen (former chief of staff for Michelle Obama) tells Foxx (the State's Attorney) that Smollett's family was worried about leaks from the CPD, and maybe the feds should take over. Foxx contacted the CPD superintendent about calling in the feds, and convinced him to call them in. (They did come in and look at the evidence but I don't think they made any public conclusions.) Then Foxx recused herself, citing a conflict of interest based on familiarity with potential witnesses (who?). Then the CPD dropped the charges.

I don't see any logical way that translates to Tchen getting the charges thrown out.

Not only is it bullshit but it's very transparent bullshit to avoid saying the CPD might have fucked up or Smollett may have been a victim.
