That's a serious concern. Once in a while someone might come up with a medically useful treatment that doctors and professional researchers don't, but I strongly suspect that's a small minority of the time. So I'm generally in favor of letting people try alternative medicine, but I think they'll be making a mistake most of the time. And if they try alternative medicine instead of a proven conventional treatment, even more so.

It's so disgusting when people use snake oil to pray on the fears of the desperate. This man has been pulling this grempork since the 80s, when HIV was less a treatable illness and more an existential threat to vulnerable communities.

Sadly, black communities are more likely to turn to Alt Med quacks like this because of the well-earned distrust for mainstream medicine, courtesy of shit like the Tuskegee experiment. =/
